This is the section on the question, "For what purpose do I practice asceticism?" If one knows the suspicion of deceiving others, in order to explain the reason for the words of the question, there is the verse, "The enjoyment of blissful union," as follows: Half should be understood as the meaning of half of the previous verse. Half of the next verse also shows the meaning of half of the previous one. "Having heard the merits of whom" means that having heard what, one abandons it, meaning like perfection, perfection in the assembly. Decay means the decay of enjoyment, knowledge, and so on. A person similar to an ascetic refers to a person similar to a renunciate, which shows that renunciates must practice well and follow accordingly. "Not attached to the happiness of samsara" refers to the fact that one is not attached to giving and so on in the verses mentioned below. "Knowing that begging itself is suffering," because attachment leads to begging, and begging leads to attachment. Therefore, abandoning begging is the best. Being accustomed to contentment is because one lives on food that is difficult to obtain and is content with practice. "A pleasing wife, sons, and powerful ones," etc., refer to showing the result of the accumulation of merit as sentient beings. Wealth is the result of the accumulation of merit arising from giving. "Freedom from afflictions is difficult to obtain," the sound of affliction is hatred itself. Why seize it? Although attachment and so on are general indications, this is the worst of all afflictions because it harms oneself and others. "Wealth also declines," this is from external non-sentient beings. "Good complexion" refers to the decline of inner complexion. "Fame" refers to the decline of other sentient beings' faith. "From happiness also" refers to the decline of thought and benefit. "Having become impoverished" refers to the fact that in order to prove the poverty that is spoken of, because one has become in a state of poverty, this is the meaning. "Hoping not to be foolish" refers to

Among all objects of compassion, the one who particularly becomes the object of compassion is called a child. A child is the object of all poverty, therefore it particularly becomes the object of compassion. Even just seeing them is unpleasant, what need is there to say about living together and going to them? These are also improper. The summary of this verse is: It does not make a distinction of benefiting oneself, and it also shows doing others' faults and deceiving them. Oneself also accomplishes non-beneficial and improper things, and for this reason, one wants to further combine. It does not accomplish distinction, nor does it accomplish benefit. The verse called "the pride of the wise" accomplishes the verse "these are improper." The pride and ignorance of the wise are the pride and ignorance of the wise. Or the pride of the wise itself is ignorance, that is, the pride and ignorance of the wise. My own nature is obscured by the ignorance of pride, therefore it accomplishes improper things as if they were proper. One wants to further combine with this. Here it speaks of benefit, but is harsh with anger, meaning that sentient beings, even if it is beneficial, are extremely angry as if it were not beneficial. Why is it called "the order of honesty is inconsistent"? Because they are deceitful people. Why is it inconsistent with discipline? Because they have little diligence in discipline. The verse called "the pride and ignorance of the wise are burned by fire" is because one goes to others, but does not accomplish the words of a beneficial question. Therefore, he himself also accomplishes things in a reversed way, and one wants to combine with this. The steadfast one is the Bodhisattva. Without deceit, the phrase "always adorned with discipline" is the antidote to the previously mentioned discipline and the phrase "the order of honesty is inconsistent." The phrase "thought of benefit" means to benefit in any way possible. If one benefits others, is it with a contaminated mind? The answer is: because it is said with reverence. The phrase "what power is there?" means to benefit with ability, these three causes are benefit.

It is shown as power with a mind free of impurities, desiring to bind. The one who delights in giving, it is certain that it is in accordance with delighting in giving. That which is not in accordance with giving is because of desiring non-reverence. The meaning of the verse called "recitation, asceticism, austerity" is that in the world, many reverences come to seek my excellence and desire to see me, which is shown by that very verse. The answer to "one who is worthy of giving excellence" is: this is not a way to be annoying. The answer to "by recitation, asceticism, offering, giving, austerity" is: it is also not displeasing. The answer to "why do you not want to see" is: it is also not that I do not want to meet you. It is so. The cause of things that are in accordance should not be shown, because it is established by its own nature. Now, if it is not that you do not want to meet, then why do you not want to see? Although there is a cause for wanting to meet, in order to show the cause of seeking excellence in not wanting to see, the verse "the excellent and wonderful form of the gods" is spoken, showing that it is the cause of not wanting to see. "The excellent and wonderful form of the gods" shows the perfection of form. That which is clear is clear. Glory and radiance show the perfection of color. Because these two are the cause of not wanting to see, it is said, "But I am afraid that my asceticism will decline." "Extremely gentle and peaceful" is the clarity of what was shown before. Showing that they are in accordance with those who have asceticism, the trunk, roots, fruits, etc., show the three noble lineages: being content with only a small amount of bad food, being content with only a small amount of bad lodging, and being content with only a small amount of bad clothing. Meditation, immeasurable, and absorption show the noble lineage that delights in abandonment. The Extensive Explanation of the Jataka Tales by the teacher Hero.
