Kurasti's Commentary In the section called "Practicing Long-lasting Happiness," it says: Generosity and respect are just generosity and respect. The happiness that arises from these two is the happiness of generosity and respect. What is done by it is that generosity and respect have created happiness. Begging, called "See how difficult it is," I am temporarily unwilling to beg from those I know, those who also beg from those they do not know, thinking, 'See how difficult that is,' therefore, one should see how difficult that is. Called "Excessive generosity," it shows the fault of excessive generosity itself leading to decline, explained by the half-verse "Thieves have not taken it," etc. Entering is entering itself, that is, attachment arising following that generosity, which is the attachment of entering into generosity, driven by loving-kindness. Therefore, for your benefit, the two verses explain that wealth is exhausted due to excessive generosity, and the relationship with not giving, and to show the metaphor of those two, it is said, "Even if there is a small loss," this verse is spoken, called "Constant" means always. Called "Small loss," the word "even" indicates, 'What need to mention spending a lot?' What does it mean? Whoever does this constantly will also become as high as an anthill. If one thinks about wanting to prosper, it is good. This shows the path called exhaustion and loss. Called "Inferior" means not giving. Practicing generosity is excellent, as stated in the following verse, from the cause of obtaining, wanting to obtain what, this is the meaning of inferior. Even if it changes like this, if one does not give, the answer to this sentence is, 'Even if I don't have it, it's okay,' the meaning of this sentence is, 'Whoever obtains previous good wealth,' this sentence is how generosity is excellent, therefore, in order to establish it as inferior, the verse about the suffering of begging is spoken. Begging itself is death, so begging is the same as death. Its antidote is obtaining wealth and finding wealth. It heals that suffering, that suffering is the suffering of poverty. Therefore, poverty and begging are the same as death.

The base person does that, like a beggar is like a dead person, striking with hail those who hold on. Whoever strikes, that is the base person. Especially, a noble and glorious person would not do that. Therefore, for the time being, this baseness has been established. In order to realize the meaning of the half-verse such as "For what is stinginess born?", it is mentioned such as "Having been struck by a beggar". What is there to do to engage in benefiting others? Even if there are no unprecedented jewels, etc., it is okay for me. This is how my mind accomplishes this. In order to accomplish "For what is the mind of stinginess born?", the meaning of "tormented by beggars" is that the mind of stinginess does not accomplish the happiness sought by beggars, and it is shown that unprecedented things are unreasonable. For what is the mind of stinginess born? Now, even for those who are born, the verse "What is the fault of stinginess?" is explained in an unreasonable way. "The fault of stinginess increases," stinginess is intolerance of the perfection of others, which shows that there is no compassion. "The mind of giving will not arise," the antidote to attachment is the mind of giving, and "completely arising" shows the increase of wisdom, because wisdom itself completely enjoys what is useless. The arising of the mind of giving is giving. Even if it arises, what need is there to talk about what has not arisen? "That completely grasping finds an excuse" means that completely grasping itself is finding an excuse, and finding an excuse is a obscuring dharma. Or, it is deception. "Completely grasping finds an excuse" is not being hungry, it is the nature of completely grasping finding an excuse. What is that? It is poverty. Because this is completely destroyed, it is precisely from poverty itself that completely grasping finds an excuse. Because it abides in the very way of completely grasping, it is the meaning of "destroyed", because it is the cause of poverty, so the result is placed on the cause. Because one wants to accomplish poverty itself, "foolishness is like flowing."
