Thinking that this whole place would be burned down, they felt fear and anxiety. They came before that hermit, prostrated, begged for forgiveness, and with palms joined, prayed: 'The king is foolish and very unstable. You have done this bad thing. That is because your curse is inauspicious. Please do not burn this city with fire. Women, children, the elderly, the sick, doctors, Brahmins who are innocent, should not be burned. Therefore, may you protect this king's entire country with merit and Dharma, as if protecting your own body.' Then, the Bodhisattva comforted those people and said: 'O you who have life, do not be afraid! I live in the forest, and without any fault, my hands, feet, nose, and ears were cut off with a sword. How could someone like me think of harming them? May that king live long, and may he not commit evil because of this. He is afflicted with the suffering of death and disease, controlled by greed and hatred. He regrets doing wrong, and only feels sorrow, not anger. If it can be remedied, even if that sin ripens on me, it is fine. Even happy people are tormented by suffering, and even if it is not for long, they cannot endure it. That king does not recognize me as a pandita, so he could not stop those words. I abandon that sin that I could not do, how could I hold a grudge against the king? Even if the king lives in the city, if suffering such as death arises, it will be felt by everyone. Therefore, one should not hold a grudge. Without that, where would suffering come from, and what would it become? Know that I live in the forest, and have already renounced, I preach patience, and will not live long before dying. Why create an opportunity for intolerance? Therefore, do not be afraid, may you be happy. In this way, the most excellent teacher has taught, to be well received as a disciple. By abiding in patience, the Dharma will not decline, and by the power of patience, one can go to the heavens.' In this way, having heard from the teacher, one should also praise the virtues of patience. One should also tell the example of that king, in order to reveal the faults of instability and intolerance. In this way, because of the faults of desire, doing wrong will cause one to fall into the lower realms.

The story of patience should also be told. The story of the impermanence of wealth should also be told. This is the Jataka of Patience, the twenty-eighth chapter. Because wrong view is the greatest obstacle, the noble ones should be especially compassionate towards those who are attached to wrong views. This is because, when the Bhagavan became a Bodhisattva, it is said that he was born in the Brahma realm through the power of the ripening of virtuous deeds from being accustomed to meditation. Although he obtained the great bliss of Brahma and the excellence of meditation, because he was accustomed to compassion for others in previous lives, the intention to benefit others did not cease without effort. Even the measure of worldly pleasure alone causes the worlds to be under the power of recklessness. The noble ones, even with the bliss of meditation, never lose the desire to benefit others. Then, for a while, that great being became a place of compassion in the desire realm, seeing hundreds of various forms of suffering and displeasure, and many harmful thoughts and injuries. The king of the country named Rupavati, named Yanakadatta, wandered in the midst of dense wrong views due to the fault of relying on bad friends and being accustomed to incorrect thoughts, and said, "There is no other world, so how can there be the ripening of good and bad deeds?" Having determined this, he had no interest in practicing Dharma, turned his back on practicing generosity and morality, despised those who practiced Dharma, had no faith in the Dharma scriptures, was rough in mind, mocked the talk of the next world, and became lax in gentleness, respect, and reverence towards ascetics and Brahmins. He was seen to be indulging in the pleasures of desire. Having thoroughly determined that good and bad deeds will bring happiness and suffering in the next world, one should abandon evil and strive to do good. Those without faith act as they please. Then, the great being, the divine hermit, saw that the king, being attached to evil views, would fall into the lower realms, and that the worlds would become meaningless.
