The Garland of Jataka Tales. Arya Hero. The Garland of Jataka Tales. Arya Hero. In Indian language: Jatakanala. In Tibetan language: The Garland of Jataka Tales. Volume One. Homage to the Bhagavan, the Lord of Speech. Possessing glorious and excellent virtues, auspiciously holding fame as its basis, immaculate and exceedingly pleasing, the wondrous deeds of the Thuba's (Buddha's) previous lives, I respectfully offer with a bouquet of poetic flowers. With these excellent names that have become signs of fame, may the paths to be trodden by the Sugatas be shown. May even those without faith in their hearts develop faith. May they be greatly delighted by Dharma-filled words. For the sake of making my poetry worthy of being heard, with just a fraction of the supreme conduct of the world's best, I, without contradicting the scriptures and philosophical sciences, compose this thinking it will benefit the world. Whoever strives for their own benefit also strives for the benefit of others. May they not deviate from following the good traces of accumulating virtues. The one who is said to be all-knowing, unmistakably and clearly renowned, the incomparable one, and the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, I bow to with my head. That Bhagavan, even in his previous life, was of the nature of unconditional great love for all sentient beings. Therefore, I prostrate to the Buddha Bhagavan with great joy. It is heard that our teachers, who take the Three Jewels as their teachers, who please their teachers with the qualities of practice, who have become teachers through the accumulation of qualities, have proclaimed and followed the enlightenment of the Bhagavan's previous life. The Bodhisattva, being in accordance with a special and steadfast vow, and being endowed with generosity, sweet words, beneficial actions, and so forth, being completely grasped by wisdom, being faultless and in accordance with the cause of compassion, when holding the world entirely, from the purity arising from being manifestly delighted in one's own Dharma, and in a great Brahmin lineage endowed with conduct, he took birth as one becoming increasingly noble. So it is said. He, having gradually trained in the activities of birth and so forth, and having manifestly been born, is naturally gentle in mind.

And, with the distinction of being a protector, and with particularly focused wisdom, due to not being lazy, he soon attained the noble position of a teacher of eighteen fields of knowledge, and of arts that are not contrary to his own lineage. Knowing the Vedas, he was like Brahma; respected by kings, he was like a king; to beings, he was like Indra manifest; to those who wish to learn, he was like a father who gives help. He was endowed with fortune and became a person with special qualities, therefore, the distinctions of gain, respect, and fame became very prosperous. That Bodhisattva, through habitually meditating on the Dharma, and becoming familiar with renunciation, did not find particular joy in it. Due to previous actions, his mind was completely pure, and after seeing the many faults of desires, he completely abandoned living at home like a disease, lived in the forest, and became very adorned. He had no attachment there either, he, through completely training in wisdom and peace, separated from the sacred conduct of the human world, like preventing attachment to evil deeds. His nature, with the essence of loving-kindness, like being fully moistened, had harmonious minds, and became minds without mutual harm, like an ascetic, even fierce wild animals lived together. Conduct pure, senses subdued, and possessing contentment and the quality of compassion, in this world, even people who were not familiar, loved him as he loved others. With few desires and not knowing evil deceit, and not being attached to gain, fame, and happiness, therefore, the minds of the gods also became pleased, becoming joyful, respectful, and very devoted. People heard that he had renounced, and being drawn by his qualities, abandoned relatives and all retinues, and became his disciples like fulfilling wishes. With pure discipline, subdued senses, and unforgetting mindfulness, very secluded, and with loving-kindness and so on, and for meditation, he taught his disciples as much as he could. Then, that great being, after some time, the assembly of disciples was mostly complete and vast. He established them on the path of virtue, placed worldly people on the supreme path of liberation, and closed the door to the lower realms.
