Therefore, since it is accomplished through many difficult deeds, one should respectfully attend and listen to the Dharma. Thus, compassion is the cause of benefiting others and the means of accomplishing the excellent nature of things, therefore, the virtues of compassion should also be praised. The first chapter of the Jataka Sutra of Bodhisattvas. The Blessed One, through many hundreds of thousands of difficult deeds, truly accomplished this excellent Dharma for the benefit of us, therefore, we should respectfully attend and listen to the Dharma. It is also heard that when this Blessed One became a Bodhisattva, he cultivated the habit from countless eons, accumulated virtuous deeds and made them mature, and for a time became the king of the Sibi country, as it is said. He liked to serve the elderly from childhood, rejoiced in taming, loved his subjects, was naturally kind, had a broad mind by understanding many sciences, and with joy, secret words, the power of majesty, and perfect fortune, he nurtured all beings like his own children. To him, the accumulation of virtues in accordance with the three wheels dwelt as if competing with each other. All things were completely fulfilled, and he was free from the torment of strife and conflict. He ridiculed the untamed libertines, utterly destroyed the foolish, intoxicated the narrow-minded, and his glory was true to his name. The king, being naturally broad and possessing the virtues of compassion, had dominion over wealth, so he fulfilled the desires of the poor, and rejoiced with a joyful and unclouded face upon seeing beauty. Then, the king, being fond of giving, had gold, grain, and all kinds of supplies piled up in the houses of charity around the city. In accordance with his own great qualities, fulfilling all desires, making people happy with respect, like rain in due season, he poured down the rain of satisfactory giving, like the clouds of a perfect age. To those who wanted food, he gave food, to those who wanted drink, he gave drink, bedding, cushions, clothes, food, and...

Incense, spices, garlands, gold, and silver, etc., were showered like rain upon those who desired them. Then, hearing of that king's great generosity, people from various places were greatly amazed and delighted, and came to that place. Even if one were to search with their mind in all human lands, they would not find another opportunity to beg. The poor people came there happily, like elephants coming to the forest and the great ocean. Then, the king, hoping to receive the begging of the people, became joyful and put on the attire of a host. When he saw those who had become unsightly coming from various places, and friendly people coming from afar, he widened his eyes with joy. Hearing the words of begging, he was as happy as hearing sweet words. The joy after giving was even greater than begging. The scent of his fame arising from generosity, proclaimed by the wind of the words of the poor, eliminated the pride of other kings, just as a spice elephant subdues other elephants. Then, after a while, the king went to inspect the houses of giving, and seeing that the number of beggars who gathered to fulfill their hopes was small, he was not satisfied because the merit of giving was not increasing. Therefore, the poor were satisfied, but the generous king was not satisfied in his heart. The amount that the poor begged was not able to match the extent of the king's generosity. He thought, "If the poor people, without fear or hesitation, were to beg for my body, how happy those noble people would be!" I think, just as I threaten and drive away the poor afflicted by afflictions with harsh words, I am even shrinking back from a little wealth, and I dare not beg. Then, the king's great generosity, without even being attached to his own body, when he realized the thought that he should give, the earth shook like a woman longing for her husband. Then, Indra, the king of the gods, because the earth shook, even the shining light of Mount Meru, the king of mountains, shook, and he wondered what this was. When he realized that the earthquake was caused by the king's extraordinary thought, he was greatly amazed and thought, "Who is it with such a mind that delights in giving..."
