After indicating where to go to that lion, it happily went to the place it liked. Then, after a while, the bird-centaur flapped its wings vigorously and flew away, wandering around, but could not find any food to eat. It was tormented by the burning thirst. And that lion was eating the meat of a newly hunted young animal, its mouth, claws, and the tips of its mane were stained with blood, looking like fragments of autumn clouds, just at the time of seasonal change. It had given help, so it could not utter any harsh begging words to it. Even though fearless, its shame made it choose the asceticism of silence at that time. However, due to need, it abandoned shame and came close to its presence. That vile fellow, even though he saw it, did not say any words of hospitality to it. Like sowing seeds on a stone slab, like burning in ashes without fire, there is no difference when the fruit ripens, like the Venda flower that gives benefit without expecting gratitude. Then, the Bodhisattva thought: "This fellow surely does not recognize me." So, without hesitation, it came before it as a new guest, spoke auspicious words, and began to beg. "King of beasts, may you obtain nectar, obtain food through great power and skill, I come to beg for a little due to poverty, may your merit and fame be accomplished." Despite such auspicious wishes and gentle words of begging, that lion, accustomed to anger and stinginess, had no manners. It turned its eyes, which had turned yellow from the burning flames of anger, as if to burn everything, and looked at the Bodhisattva and said: "Hey, you wait a moment. I have no moisture of compassion, I only eat various hunted beasts. My mouth is used to that. Although giving life is a great favor, you come to humiliate me like this, begging like this, have you become tired of life, wanting to see another world?" Then, the Bodhisattva, rejected by its harsh words, felt ashamed. It immediately flew into the sky, using the sound of flapping wings to indicate, "We are birds, so we are helpless." After indicating in this way, it got up and left.

Then, the forest deity, unable to bear his insults towards him and to test how long he could endure, came before the Bodhisattva and said: "Hey, king of birds, you have bestowed favor upon this wicked one, and even though I have power, why do you tolerate such insults? What good is it to be so tolerant of the shameless? Your beak can pluck out its eyes, and though cunning and powerful, you can defeat it. If you can snatch the meat from between its teeth, why do you tolerate its strength and arrogance?" Thereafter, because the Bodhisattva was so insulted, although the deity urged and exhorted him, in order to show his own good nature, he said: "Such behavior is not like ours, do not say such things. The virtues practiced for the poor are done with compassion, not for profit. Whether others know or not, who would be confused by that? If others bestow favor but are ungrateful, then he has completely deceived me. Who would help him in order to receive a reward for doing good? Helping others obtains merit, and there is fruit in the next life as well. In this life, one also gains fame and glory, and will not be devoured by demons. Who would hold a grudge against someone who has done such good deeds? If one bestows favor in order to receive a reward, it is like incurring debt, better not to bestow favor. If I bestow favor and the other is ungrateful, if someone harms him because of that, after washing the body with virtue and fame, would he not act like an elephant? Bestowing favor on the poor but not appreciating the kindness, even if one does not become virtuous and wealthy, who with a mind would ever bestow favor again? My fame is gone, and future efforts are in vain. I think it is acceptable to treat him this way. No matter who you do good to, if you disregard the morality of friendship, do not be angry or intimidating, and then quietly leave." Thereafter, the deity was pleased with the good words he spoke and repeatedly praised him, saying "Good!" and spoke those pleasing words: "Even without a topknot and without bark clothing, you are a hermit, an ascetic who is hidden and not apparent.

Merely by these, accomplishment will not be achieved; only with qualities can true accomplishment be achieved. Having said this, he became exceedingly joyful, then made offerings, and immediately vanished. Therefore, even without urging, virtuous people will not engage in evil because they are not accustomed to it. Thus, the virtues of noble beings should also be praised. If one dwells in patience in this way, enemies will not increase, nor will accusations increase, and in order to make many beings happy and content, words of patience should also be applied to this. If one engages in individual investigation many times in this way, the wise will protect their own excellent qualities; therefore, the virtues of individual investigation should also be praised. The nature of the Tathagata is great, and if one becomes accustomed to a good nature in this way, even if one is reborn as an animal, it will not disappear.
