If so, he would act as if he were very tame, abandoning pride and behaving towards it with humility. Once, that great Bodhisattva fell asleep and lay down unguarded, and that monkey suddenly jumped on him from his neck. Sometimes it would ride on him and run wildly. Sometimes, because it was hungry, it would block his path to find food. Sometimes it would stir his ears with a stick. Sometimes, when he went swimming in the water, it would ride on his head and cover his eyes with its hands. Sometimes it would ride on him and run around waving a stick, pretending to be Yama, the Lord of Death. However, that Bodhisattva, the great being, endured all the unruly pranks that it played without agitation, anger, or displeasure, but as if he were benefiting from them. Sinful beings, by their very nature, rely on paths that are contrary to taming. Virtuous beings, because of habit, also endure it as if benefiting from it. Then, a yaksha, unable to bear the torment caused by it, and in order to test the mind of that great Bodhisattva, waited on the path where that chief of bulls was coming, ridden by that unruly monkey, and said: Hey, wait a moment! Did you buy this unruly monkey? Or did you lose in gambling? Or is there some fear? Or do you think I have no power? Why do you allow yourself to be insulted and ridden like this? Alas! The tip of your horn, even with the power of a vajra, can destroy a vajra or a mountain like a vajra. If your feet and hands were to strike in anger, the top of a rock would sink as if into mud. Your body is as hard and stable as a rock, endowed with power and majesty, naturally majestic and awe-inspiring, even lions would be put to shame. Therefore, kick it with your hooves or dispel its arrogance with your horn! Like someone powerless, you endure the torment of this evil, sinful monkey. How can one tame an evil person with qualities, conduct, happiness, and coolness? Like treating a phlegm disease with hot and rough things, it will only increase it.

Then, the Bodhisattva looked at that Yaksha, holding the aspect of patience, and spoke with gentle words: "I know that this one is small in power and always behaves dishonestly. Therefore, shouldn't I be patient with him? For the mighty and incorrigible, what use is there in patience? For those who practice virtue and gentleness, what need is there for patience? For those who are small in power and make mistakes, it is good to be patient even when one has power. Therefore, rather than diminishing virtues, it is better to be utterly humiliated. To accept being insulted by those who are small in power is the best of all virtues. Why argue for the sake of diminishing one's own teachings by killing him especially for the sake of delighting in virtues? The time for patience, which always leads to happiness, is extremely rare to find. If others have done such things, who would be confused by that? If one does not care about the decline of one's own Dharma, but is like entering (fire) for the sake of one's own sins, if I do not practice patience even with this one, what could be more ungrateful than that?" The Yaksha said: "Therefore, you will never be liberated from the harm caused by this one. Disliking virtues, not taming the unruly, if one does not abandon the cultivation of patience, who has the ability to inflict punishment?" The Bodhisattva said: "Wanting to achieve happiness by harming others, or wanting to prevent the arising of suffering, because fruition does not bring happiness, one cannot achieve happiness in that way. Therefore, if I abide in patience, even if I instruct through methods, if he still does not understand, because there are other lesser forms of patience, I will turn him away from the wrong path with those methods. If one is insulted by such a person, one will not cling to self in that way. If one sees the faults, one will not do so later. However, one will also be liberated from that." Then, that Yaksha became very happy and amazed, extremely delighted, bowed his head to that great Bodhisattva, clapped his hands and exclaimed, "Good! Good!" Expressing his joy, he spoke those pleasant and delightful words. How could such Dharma exist among animals? How could such a love for merit exist? Such a wonderful thought dwells in such a body. You are suffering in the difficult forest!
