Who would not strive to accumulate merit through practicing discipline? Even if one is content with wealth, if someone's mind is obscured by the darkness of miserliness, and does not gain fame through generosity, that person is not worth looking at. If one must give without control, it does not benefit anyone. If wealth is used wisely, if some merit can be gained, then who, having merit, would rely on the path of miserliness? The merits arising from generosity, including joy and various kinds of fame, are abundant. Generosity is called a great treasure that follows you, not shared by thieves and others. Generosity and the faults of greed purify the mind filled with defilements. Generosity is a comfortable vehicle for traversing the path of samsara without effort. Generosity accomplishes many pleasures and is the best of good friends. Whether it is perfect wealth, or the merit of teachings, whether it is the abode of the thirty-three gods, or the merit of a beautiful appearance, whatever you desire, all these can be obtained through generosity. If the ultimate meaning is thus determined, who would not give? It is said that generosity extracts the essence of wealth. It is said that generosity is the cause of all powerful ones. Generosity is the most excellent conduct of an auspicious person. When wisdom is low, even a dust-like generosity cannot be done. Thereafter, those retinues were very happy and respectful in accepting the king's words, and thus clearly inclined towards cultivating merits such as generosity. Therefore, because it arises from an extremely pure mind, and because of generosity to a special vessel, its ripening is great. There is nothing called a small generosity. Therefore, if with an extremely pure mind, one gives to the Sangha of noble ones, the supreme field of merit, I will also think that obtaining such perfect wealth, or even more excellent wealth than that, will not be long. One should generate joy. The story of the one who gave a bowl of warm porridge, the third story ends. Second volume. If noble people give without fearing to lose themselves, then sitting comfortably, who would not give? It was also heard that: When the Bhagavan was previously a Bodhisattva, he possessed special fortune and was endowed with pleasing qualities.

Because the assembly of mothers possessed perfect wealth and had a character with no inconsistencies in their behavior, they became a place of reverence for the people of the world. Possessing a noble lineage and mastering various artistic skills, their wisdom was extremely pure. Due to their great merit, even the king revered them. Because they had an extremely generous nature, they were born as a merchant who shared wealth with the people of the world, as it was said. The poor were all delighted and proclaimed to each other: His name is known as the Hero of Generosity, spreading in all ten directions. Doubts about whether to give or not did not exist in the minds of the poor. The great power of his generosity was widely proclaimed, and the poor begged with confidence and courage. He did not hide his wealth for his own comfort, nor was he suppressed by greed and attachment. He could not bear the suffering of the poor, so he refrained from saying "I have nothing." Then, at one time, when the great Bodhisattva reached the time for a meal, he bathed and anointed himself with fragrant oils, and prepared various foods, drinks, and delicacies with qualities such as flavor and softness, cooked by skilled chefs. A solitary Buddha, who burned all the firewood of afflictions, came to his house for alms, desiring to increase the accumulation of merit. Having arrived, he stood in his doorway, with an attitude of unwavering, unmoving, steadfast, and peaceful, his eyes lowered to the ground. He became extremely peaceful and stood there. He held a begging bowl in his lotus-like hand. Then, the evil demon, unable to bear the Bodhisattva's perfect generosity, in order to hinder him, manifested a great hell filled with fiercely burning flames, unfathomably deep, extremely terrifying, emitting frightening sounds, and filled with many swaying beings, between the solitary Buddha and the two doors. Then, the Bodhisattva, seeing the solitary Buddha going for alms, said to his wife: Please, offer alms to the noble one yourself.
