One should listen attentively. The greatness of the Thus-Gone One, and as before, the praise of the qualities of compassion, and also the statement that the fruit of merit will be seen in this very life, should be spoken. Thus, by cultivating reverence and accumulating merit, I will obtain great power, and the continuous stream of fame, like a flower, is pleasing and has been shown in this very life. The Jataka of being born as the king of the Shibi country, this is the second. Giving that arises from a completely pure mind, and giving to a special vessel, because the result is great, there is nothing that is called small. It is also heard that when the Blessed One became a Bodhisattva, it is said that he became the king of the Kosala country. He was supreme in all the qualities of a king, such as joy, secret words, power, and ability, and he was especially enriched by the excellent qualities of perfect fortune. Adorned with perfect fortune, his qualities became even clearer. As the splendor of autumn becomes clear, like the bright rays of the moon. He abandoned arrogant enemies, and became attached to those who relied on him. The followers of wrath and love, other kings were also like that. Since he became the embodiment of Dharma, he had no poisonous thoughts of harming others. His glory did not overwhelm the enemy, and the subjects became close to him. He remembered his past lives. Having remembered his past lives, he increased greatly, and gave special gifts, which were the cause and basis of happiness, to monks, Brahmins, the poor, and beggars. Those who were not evil in their vows of morality, and those who were steadfast in their observance of the fast, also took them correctly on the appointed days. In the king's retinue, and in my own retinue of consorts, in order to proclaim the power of merit, and in order to place the people of the world in virtue, with a joyful mind, these two verses with definite meaning were repeatedly spoken: Even a small act of respect to the Sugata, it has been heard before that there is no small fruit. Even a full portion of coarse, unsalted warm food, its fruit

Behold how this great wealth has come to be! Various vehicles, horses, and elephants strutting proudly, my vast army, this great land, possessing abundant wealth and glory, and a vast number of consorts. Behold this warm food, pure and delicious fruit! And those great ministers, the elderly Brahmins, and all the high-ranking people of the court, though their hearts are filled with great wonder, none dared to ask him again why the great king always recited these two verses. Then, that queen of the king, a woman with excellent eloquence and unimpeded speech, was filled with curiosity. During a conversation, she asked the king in front of everyone: 'Lord of men, what you say, what you think in your heart, what comes out of your mouth, because you said those words, my heart is filled with surprise and has become very agitated. If others also hear these words, could you tell me, O king, why you say these words? If you want to keep it a secret, I will never reveal it to anyone. Therefore, I humbly ask you.' Then, that king looked at the queen with a joyful and loving gaze, and said with a smiling face: 'Without explaining the cause and reason, hearing me say these words, is it only you who are surprised and agitated? All these great ministers, their hearts are also filled with surprise and agitation. My court, attendants, and consorts, please also listen to me, why I say these words. I remember waking up as if from a dream, although my conduct was upright, I was arrogant because of only a little wealth, driven by karma, living a lowly life, I used to be a hired worker in this city. Despised by others, doing hard and menial work, seeking refuge, afraid of being recognized, I engaged in that work. I saw four monks coming for alms, they subdued their faculties, like followers of the glory of monks. I bowed to them with a gentle heart, and respectfully offered them a little warm food at home. This is the sprout of that little bit of merit! The crowns of other kings touch my feet. Thinking about this, I said those words to you, my goddess.' This is merit!'
