Thus, it should also be said of the great essence of the Thus-Gone One. One should make offerings, listen to the true Dharma, speak words of patience, be close to loving-kindness, and reveal the faults of sinful deeds. The chapter on being born as a great monkey, the twenty-fourth. The ninth fascicle. Those who possess great compassion will have compassion even for those who kill them if they encounter misfortune, and will not abandon them. For example, a Bodhisattva once lived in a remote and desolate hermitage, devoid of human habitation and silent, where many kinds of wild animals dwelled, the roots of trees and many shrubs were submerged in the thick grass, and no paths were created by the carts and feet of guests. Where streams flowed, and ravines and cliffs made the ground uneven. It is said that there lived a wild animal named Sharabha, endowed with great strength and skill, swiftness, abundant mental power, and a slender body. Accustomed to compassion, it did not harm sentient beings, and was content to live on grass, leaves, and water alone. With the merit of contentment, like a yogi who delights in seclusion, it delighted in dwelling in that solitary hermitage, adorning it. With the body of a wild animal, yet with a mind as steadfast as a human, Like an ascetic, cherishing all beings. Dwelling there in that solitary forest, Like a yogi, nourished by the finest grasses. Then, for a time, the king who ruled that land rode upon a fine chariot, Holding bow and arrow in hand, To test whether he was skilled or unskilled in shooting wild animals, he pursued them out of attachment. His swift horse left the horses, elephants, chariots, and foot soldiers far behind, and he came to that direction. Seeing the great Bodhisattva from afar, he thought to kill him, and drew out a sharp arrow. The swift horse galloped towards the direction where the great being was. Then the Bodhisattva saw the king riding on a swift horse, holding bow and arrow, pursuing him, Although he had the power to retaliate,

In order to avoid retaliation, it ran away with extremely swift speed. That good horse pursued, and there was a large canyon on the way, which it jumped over like a calf and fled. Then, that horse pursued with great speed along the very path that the Śarabha deer had fled. Reaching the canyon, it could not jump and stopped. Then, the king, along with his weapons, fell from the horse into the great canyon, like Asura soldiers falling into the sea. His eyes were fixed on that wild animal, and he did not see the canyon. Due to instability, he slipped from the horse's back. Because of the horse's speed, the king fell. Then, the Bodhisattva did not hear the sound of the horse's hooves, and thought, 'Has the king returned again?' When he looked back, he saw the horse standing at the edge of the canyon without a rider. He thought, 'The king must have fallen into the canyon.' There is no place to rest here, no tree with dense shade, and no lake like blue lotus petals. In such a wilderness, where fierce wild animals roam, there is no place to leave the horse and rest. There are also no wild animals to hunt, and not even a little thick grass to hide in. Therefore, the king must have been eaten by evil spirits and fallen into this canyon.' Having determined this, the great being thought, 'Even though he came to kill me, I will generate great compassion for him.' He was adorned with fine banners and ornaments, shields and many weapons, escorted by horses, elephants, vehicles, and infantry, and an army making sounds with various musical instruments, followed behind, sheltered by beautiful parasols, and made beautiful by waving yak-tail whisks. Many people made offerings like a god, and he enjoyed the happiness of the kingdom, but today he has fallen into a great precipice. The force of the fall has broken his limbs. Will he be victorious? Or will he grieve? Alas! How strange! He has become the nature of affliction, one who has not experienced suffering, a very young person, bringing misfortune to virtuous people.
