Who has rendered great benefit to yourself? The Bodhisattva said: Great King, this I found myself, no one else has found it. The ground is naturally hard, only kusha grass and ordinary grass are laid, and lying down is painful. In order to easily perform religious rituals, I cannot find a stone. I saw this great monkey in the ascetic forest, and I thought to myself, I wish I could get the skin of this monkey as something for my practice. If I sit or lie on this, I can accomplish my practice, and even on the king's good bed, I can perform my own religious rituals. So I took its skin and made it disappear. Hearing these words, the king became gentle and humble, and said nothing more to the Bodhisattva. He was ashamed and remained silent for a while. Then, those ministers, who had previously resented the great Bodhisattva, now found an opportunity to speak, they smiled, looked at the king, pointed to the Bodhisattva and said: Emaho! Look at the wisdom brought by your joy in the Dharma! Emaho! Although you possess great strength and firm will, you live in the ascetic forest. Practicing asceticism alone, your body is weak, yet you can kill such a great monkey, it is truly amazing! May your asceticism be successful! Then, the Bodhisattva, without anger, said: You do not look at your own good views, it is not appropriate to slander me like this. Doing so will not bring you the fame of a wise man. Living beings, please listen. Words that harm my views, whatever harms others, that also harms me. Wishing others to spread bad reputation. Thus, that great being spoke generally to those ministers. Wanting to speak separately, he said to that minister who spoke for no reason: If it is said that the nature of beings is suchness, if that is true, why do you slander me? The monkey died of its own nature, why should I bear the sin of killing? If killing it is my sin, then this will prove that everything arises from causes and conditions.

Therefore, this assertion of causelessness should be abandoned. Here, it is inappropriate for you to speak such words. If it is like the growth of lotus pistils, etc., then why doesn't it always arise without cause? Water, etc., and seeds, etc., definitely produce it. If they exist, it grows; if they don't exist, it doesn't grow. Furthermore, you who possess life, please contemplate this well for a moment! The assertion of causelessness established with reason, you yourself have refuted your own promise. If you do not wish to demonstrate reason, what benefit is there in mere promises? Some, because they have not seen causes and conditions in certain places, assert that everything is causeless. But these people, while clearly seeing that those things have causes, speak contradictory and malicious words out of hatred. If a cause is not seen to exist anywhere, how can one definitively say that it does not exist? When the sun sets, like the stainless wheel of the sun, it exists, but it is not visible due to other causes and conditions. Furthermore, you rely on agreeable places because you desire comfort, but you do not wish to rely on things contrary to that. Therefore, you also rely on kings, but you always say that causes do not exist. If things are like that, and causes are not seen, if causelessness is seen, and the monkey is killed, what is there to blame me for? Thus, that great being made the one who asserted causelessness lose all confidence before the wise, and then called out to the one who asserted Ishvara as the cause, saying: Those who possess Dharma should not blame me in that way. If you believe that the cause of everything is the action of Ishvara, then look! If everything is done by Ishvara, then the monkey was also killed by him, why are you angry with me? Why do you impose the faults of others upon me? At that time, that great monkey died, if you had seen its pitiful state and not killed it, why do you widely proclaim that the cause of beings is Ishvara? Alas, good people, furthermore, if you believe that everything is done by Ishvara, then relying on Ishvara, why do you offer prostrations, etc.? That of yours is self-arisen, from whom did it come? The offerings that you make,
