The king greatly loved him and, understanding his loving-kindness, pleased him and spoke thus: When I first became a friend, because I held the conduct of a great being, whatever a holy friend does, that is what you have done for me. With this ceremony of reverence, what you have shown me, which great king would think of? It will not be forgotten and become a target. What is needed, what is especially important? The great king relies on and depends on you. You love guests and desire merit. Having become accustomed to this, holding the conduct of a king for the benefit of the subjects, like a sage treating equally, striving in asceticism. Your merits exist naturally. Although your nature is subdued, the merits worthy of praise are true. I do not want the inevitable abyss of beings. Knowing this law of merit and fault, who with a mind would go on the evil path of no benefit? One will not gain territory by bravery, nor will one gain it by means of wealth and effort. Without merit, wealth, clothing, and effort are useless. The king will gain by merit. Even the glory of the lord of the gods depends on merit. If there is merit, the lineage will also greatly increase. Fame also emanates from merit. The power of a great being also resides in merit. The merit that is brighter than moonlight is that it makes enemies unbearable, hating with arrogance, harboring resentment, being very jealous, being sincere, and very happy. May the king, who is so subdued and so on, with good and great merits undiminished, subdue the arrogant petty kings with power, and please protect this land and also nurture the subjects. Benefiting the subjects is the most important thing for a king. If the king delights in the Dharma, this is the path of happiness in both lives. The subjects also act like the king's conduct. Therefore, learn to abide in the land according to the Dharma. May the lord of the thirty-three gods also protect you. Even if you dwell happily by your side, it is like my many friends calling out in suffering. Then, the king and his retinue were very pleased to hear these words, and with respect and sweet words, they sent off the two swan leaders again. Then, the Bodhisattva teacher
