There was also one. At that time, the one who transformed in that way was the venerable Ānanda. These two cherished and loved each other, with virtue as their foundation and the power of virtue being extremely great. They were well-arranged for the benefit of both worlds. The main figures of teacher and disciple were like ordinary disciples. On the other hand, like a father and the most excellent son, others were like ordinary sons. Gods, nāgas, yakshas, gandharvas, kinnaras, vidyādharas, and ascetics who saw them directly were greatly amazed. These two, dwelling among the flock of swans, had their blissful bodies rising and their actions united. Just as two wings flying in the sky have united actions to support the body. Likewise, these two protected those flocks of swans, just as the flourishing of dharma and politics protects people, and that lake became exceedingly beautiful. Initially, the many gathered, with their melodious and pleasing sounds, like the swaying of white lotuses, adorned that lake exceedingly beautifully. Some swans scattered separately, while others formed into flocks. The beautiful splendor of clouds scattering in the sky was also surpassed. Then, the swan king, who delighted in benefiting all sentient beings, and the virtuous one who was like the first minister and army commander, with their special virtues and great power, caused many accomplished ones, sages, vidyādharas, and gods to be filled with admiration. They only whispered about the stories arising from the fame of those two, and they dwelled there. Possessing a color like the radiance of pure gold, with glorious bodies, speaking words clearly, disciplined and wise, arising from the principles of the Dharma. These two swan bodies were certainly extraordinary. Because they proclaimed virtues without jealousy, the fame of those two spread in all directions. Kings also developed faith in them, like being born in an assembly of saints. At that time, in the country of Vārāṇasī, there was a king named Brahmadatta. He heard the stories of the special virtues of the swan king and the swan army commander from trusted ministers and elderly Brahmins.

Having heard the clamor in the assembly, (the king) desired even more to see those two (swans). So (the king) said to those ministers who were versed in various state affairs and possessed erudite minds: 'By all means, devise some good methods to bring those two swans before my eyes.' Then, those ministers, combining their own thoughts with the scriptures, reported to the king: 'Sentient beings all crave happiness, and happiness is the supreme virtue. They can be lured from here and there, so they will come upon hearing these things. Therefore, wherever there are words that can make them happy, it is superior to any place. Please allow us to build a lake with extraordinary virtues in one corner of the monastery here. Erect flags, proclaiming the promise of fearlessness to all birds. Once they hear of the amazing and extraordinary virtues of this instrument of happiness, they will naturally come here. It should be done this way.' Please, Your Majesty, consider! Most sentient beings cherish obtaining happiness, and upon hearing the joy of happiness, even if they are in a secluded place, their minds will be captivated.' Then, the king thought: 'Indeed, that is so.' Before long, he ordered the construction of a large lake that could rival the enjoyment and virtues of the wish-fulfilling lake, not far from the gardens of the capital. The lake was filled with lotus flowers, utpala flowers, water lilies, white lotuses, सौगन्धिक (Tibetan, Devanagari, saugandhika, fragrant lotus), red lotuses, and red water lilies, and filled with clear water, extremely pleasing. Lush trees and beautiful flowers, with verdant and bright leaves, surrounded the edge of the lake like watching a performance. The lotuses seemed to be smiling, swaying with the rippling waves. Bees infatuated with the lotuses, buzzing and flying around, filled the lake. In some places, under the moonlight, water lilies bloomed; in some places, shaded by the shadows of trees, they resembled crescent moons. The blooming lotuses and utpala flowers, as if painted by the waves with fingers, adorned the shores of the lake beautifully, and in some places, they were like patterns sprinkled with gold dust. The petals of the lotus and utpala flowers, along with the stamens, there and there.
