If I were to become like that, then he would certainly have no power of asceticism. If he were someone who is free from desire, then one should not look at him. Therefore, thinking to observe whether his power of asceticism is great or small, the king, like one who delights in benefiting the Bodhisattva, said: 'Hey, renunciant, you, in this world there are many cunning and stubborn people. In this kind of secluded forest that is impossible to escape, is it permissible to dwell together with such a young woman? If someone offends your wife, then I will also be scolded, be careful! In a solitary place, an ascetic with a wife, if someone insults him with means including the Dharma, if his wife is openly robbed, what else can one do other than grieve? Even if anger arises, the mind will be confused, and one will do things that contradict the Dharma and ruin one's reputation. Therefore, she should be placed in the city. What need does an ascetic have to be close to a woman?' The Bodhisattva said: 'What the king says is also true, if it really happens like that, please listen to what I should do. If someone, out of pride or without investigation, comes here to harm me, like thick dust being pressed down by rain, I will not let him go while I am alive.' Then, the king thought: 'This person is very infatuated with his wife, so he has no power of asceticism.' Therefore, he despised the great Bodhisattva. Because he did not suspect that he would cause harm, and also succumbed to the control of desire, he ordered those who saw the woman: 'You go and bring that renunciant woman into the palace!' The renunciant woman, hearing those words, like a doe in the forest tormented by a fierce wild beast, felt fear and shame, her face turned pale, her eyes filled with tears, her voice trembled, and she uttered this lament in distress: 'If the world is impoverished and tormented by enemies, seeking refuge from kings like a father, if they commit injustice to anyone, then to whom can he seek a father's protection? Alas! Woe is me! The rules of worldly governance have deteriorated, those who cannot take good care of the poor, are they already non-existent? Or have they already died?'

Alas! Dharma is reduced to mere fame. What can the gods do while the master is still alive? If it were someone else, it might be worth protecting, but sinners are leading me away. I have no merit, so I say nothing. If a hail of curses were to fall upon me, even the shape of the mountains would be unseen, only to be remembered. Even if I become like this, I say nothing. However, the wicked woman has survived a little. Even though I am so utterly destitute, if I cannot become an object of compassion, it is truly pitiful. Should the destitute be rescued by the compassionate? Is this not the conduct of an ascetic? Even if I am later prevented, I do not turn back, it seems to be still held in your heart. Even though you are displeased, I have come. Alas! How could I possibly do as I please? Thus, that ordained woman uttered lamentations of compassion, relying only on smoke, those men dispatched by the king, the great Bodhisattva, seeing her, placed her on the chariot and led her into the palace. The Bodhisattva also bound the power of anger by the strength of discriminating observation, and like that, without agitation in his mind, he was very peacefully sewing the patches of the mendicant's robe. Then, the king said to him: Words dominated by unbearable anger, you have arrogantly spoken secret praises. Seeing the afflicted mother being robbed, yet powerless and dejected, you sit very quietly. Therefore, show your own power and skill! Also show the glory of abiding in asceticism. Because you did not know how to measure my ability, you did not see the meaningless fault of the promise. The Bodhisattva said: King, I have not failed in my vow, please be aware. Whoever harms me, even if cunning, I will not let go. I will also openly pacify him. Therefore, I still abide by my vow. Then, the Bodhisattva, with words that were extremely firm and extremely peaceful, caused people to believe that he possessed the virtues of an ascetic, thinking: This Brahmin seems to be speaking with someone else in mind, I did not realize this, so I was so unsteady, and thus arose discrimination.
