If one especially hates bad conduct, people will abandon virtuous deeds. If that happens, what is the use of living? Therefore, for this person who is full of hope, having abandoned the home of afflictions with bad conduct, in the ascetic forest, with the merits of joy, practice and fully fill it. The great being, having determined thus, then returned again, and told the king's attendant, 'Please inform the king that the merchant has come to see him.' Having been granted an audience, he also came before the king as before, and the king asked, 'Why have you come?' He replied, 'I wish to renounce the world, please grant me permission.' Then the king, with reverence, spoke these words of love, 'Even though I have relatives and close friends like me, with wealth, methods, and power, what suffering that I cannot overcome makes you go to the end? If you want wealth, take wealth from me. If there is harm, I will avert it. I and my relatives and friends beseech you, what do you not want that you go to the end?' Thus, the king admonished that great being with love and respect, and spoke to him with gentle words, 'Relying on you, how could there be harm? How could you become impoverished by wealth? Therefore, I do not go to the end because of poverty. Please listen to why I am going.' Those who are weeping with sorrow, proclaim loudly, 'I will renounce the world.' I have become an object of faith, possessing qualities. Therefore, I wish to dwell in the solitary wilderness.' The king said, 'You should not abandon us merely because of the words of people. Such a perfection of qualities as yours is not enough to merely protect the words of people, nor is it impossible not to do so.' The words of worldly falsehood disturb those who understand them at will. If someone takes those words to heart, if it can be done, what is there to say?' The Bodhisattva said, 'Great King, please do not speak thus. It is not that I do not follow the good words and fame of people. Please consider, lord of men.'

Oh, whenever virtuous, when one is known to possess Dharma, people should not fall from that, and should also strive for the sake of shame. Known to have merits and holding hope, however it may be, if allowed, good reputation will grow from fame. Otherwise, like a dry well, merits that do not match reality will not increase. Due to the movement of the wind of conceptualization, people's fame declines, and it is very difficult to regain fame. Like a black snake angered and raising its head, completely grasping becomes the root of disputes, and for the caste that should be abandoned, I, the only protector, should not go against it. Respectfully knowing and loving the subjects, it is appropriate for you to do so, but since I have renounced, what use is there for noisy afflictions? After praying in this way, that great being was allowed by the king and prepared to go to the forest of asceticism. Then, his friends, relatives, and those who depended on him gathered, their eyes filled with tears of sorrow, and they grabbed his feet, not allowing him to leave. Some folded their palms and prayed, blocking his path. Some grabbed his neck, tempted him with sweet words, and led him back home. Some, with an arrogant demeanor, spoke harsh words randomly, scolding him. Some said to friends and family, "Don't you have compassion?" and wouldn't let him go. Some said, "Living at home and practicing asceticism is more meritorious," and inspired him with pleasing and rational words. Others prayed, saying that living in the forest of asceticism is very painful, and there are still some things that have not been completed. Some doubted, saying that it is uncertain whether there will be meritorious results in the next life, and listed various differences in scriptures, striving to make him change his mind. In this way, they did not allow him to renounce, hindering and pulling him from going to the forest, looking at those tearful friends, this thought appeared in his mind: "Will the embrace of a friend make a friend become negligent, will it be helpful?"
