Returning to the tree's hut, he properly began the ritual of meditation. He said nothing, so as not to displease the other hermits. The other brothers thought in their hearts: 'This one seems to have definitely taken his share.' So each took their share of the lotus root, ate it properly in their own leaf huts, and sat meditating. Similarly, on the second, third, fourth, and fifth days, his share of the lotus root was made invisible by Indra. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva also remained undisturbed and became very peaceful. For virtuous people, it is easy to die from exhaustion of life due to mental disturbance. Therefore, the wise will not be disturbed in mind, even for the sake of their lives. Then, as evening approached, those hermits came in order to listen to the Dharma, arriving in order at the Bodhisattva's leaf hut. They saw that his body was very emaciated, his cheeks and eyes were sunken, his complexion was poor, his voice was weak, and although he was haggard, he possessed the qualities of steadfastness and great peace, like seeing a waxing moon that brings joy. Approaching him, with respect, as if rebuking him, they asked, 'What is wrong? What is the cause of your emaciation?' Then the Bodhisattva told them what had happened. Those ascetics thought, 'Such an unrighteous thing is impossible.' Because he was so weak, they were also displeased, saying to each other, 'How strange!' Then, feeling ashamed, they sat with their heads bowed. Because the realm of entering wisdom was also obscured by the power of Indra, they were not certain what had happened. Then, the Bodhisattva's younger brother, in order to show that he had no greed in his heart and that he was pure, made a special vow: 'Brahmin, who took your root? May he possess houses adorned with the signs of wealth, find a desirable wife, and have sons and grandsons!' His younger brother said: 'Brahmin, who took your root? May he wear garlands, necklaces, sandalwood, fine clothes, and ornaments touched by children, and enjoy endless desires!' Again,

Someone said: Whoever took your root, that (person) will obtain wealth and grain from plowing the fields, will be very happy with sons and speech, will not worry about life, and will be happy at home. Again, someone said: Whoever took your root with greed, (that person) will treat the king tamely like a slave, (people) will bow and offer their headdresses, will pay homage very respectfully, and will rule the entire earth in the manner of a king. Again, someone said: Whoever took the root of someone like you, that (person) will become a prayer leader in front of the king, may he bring happiness and well-being through (སྔགས,梵文:मंत्र,Romanization: mantra, meaning: mantra) and so on, may he also be respected by the king. Again, someone said: Desiring the root but not desiring merit, (that person) will learn the Vedas well and display them, with great hope for ascetics, may all the villagers make offerings to him. A friend said: What is someone like you attached to in the root? (That person) will obtain and enjoy about four hundred sacred and prosperous regions, obtained from kings, and will eventually die without being free from desire. A slave said: Living a wasted life for the sake of the root, (that person) will become a village chief among friends, will not be punished by the king, and will be happy with women's songs and dances. A sister said: Whoever took the root of someone like you, that (person) will become the queen of the king, the radiance of beauty and wealth will shine, and will become the best of a thousand sacred queens. A female slave said: Whoever sees only the root and does not see the Dharma, that (person) is alone, separated from all virtues, becomes intoxicated after being respected, and will enjoy delicious food. Then, a yaksha, an elephant, and a monkey living in that forest came there to listen to the Dharma, and after hearing those words, they felt very ashamed and unhappy. Then, in order to show his purity, the yaksha swore an oath in front of them: For the sake of your roots, any mistakes will be used to decorate great temples, repair the damage to washing and drainage holes, and illuminate with sunlight. The elephant said: Noble Thupa, whoever stole your root, that (person) will be bound by six hundred sacred nooses, like a wound disease stirred by sharp hooks, the forest will deteriorate.
