It is said that those are the Dharma words that lead to the path of peace and extreme faith. The maidservant there also attends to them with great respect and affection. She takes out lotus roots from that lake, arranges them cleanly and evenly on large lotus leaves by the lakeside, signals the time with the sound of tapping, and then returns. After that, those hermits finish their recitations and fire offerings, and the elders leave one by one. From the evenly divided lotus roots, they each take a portion in order, eat it according to the ritual in their respective leaf huts, and abide with a mind devoted to meditation. When they are thus settled, they do not wish to look at each other except during the time for listening to the Dharma. They are so disciplined and have such conduct, and they love extreme tranquility and are immersed in meditation. Their reputation is like the pure lotus petals and stamens. He went there to examine them. He also saw that those people were clearly inclined towards meditation, not associated with evil deeds and without suffering, and were abiding in great joy in tranquility. Thinking that they had extremely firm qualities, he temporarily focused his mind on examining them. Effortlessly from the edge, inclined towards peace and abiding, the virtuous place hope in their hearts. Then, after taking out the white and soft lotus roots like the teeth of a baby elephant, washing them clean, and arranging them evenly on the clean blue lotus leaves that resembled precious ghee, adorned with lotus petals and stamen ornaments, the maidservant signaled the time to those hermits with the sound of tapping, and after the maidservant returned, Indra, the lord of the gods, hid the first portion of the lotus roots in order to examine the Bodhisattva. Even if suffering arises, or even if one becomes unhappy, one should see it as if the stable source of joy is appearing. Then, the Bodhisattva went on and on, and when he arrived at the place of the first portion, the lotus root was gone. Seeing that the decorations on the lotus leaf were scattered, he thought: Who took my share of the lotus root? Without agitation or anger in his mind, then
