Those who taste the bliss of solitude regard desire as a place of contempt and feel displeased, considering it as harm. That is to say, a Bodhisattva was once born into a great Brahmin family, one who was renowned for his virtues and without fault. He had six younger brothers, whose appearance and qualities matched his, endowed with the virtues of love and respect, always following him, and one sister, making seven in all. He mastered the Vedas and their branches, gained the reputation of a scholar, and was respected by the people. He served his parents with the utmost reverence, like gods. He taught his brothers knowledge like a teacher and a father, making them proficient in discipline and taming, and then resided at home. After a long time, his parents passed away, and he was tormented by grief. After performing the funeral rites for his parents, and after the days of mourning had passed, he said to his brothers: Although I wish to stay together for a long time, death separates us, tormented by great sorrow, this is certain in this world. I am attached to the household, the enemy of death has killed me. Therefore, for the sake of the good path, I desire to renounce. Therefore, you should know. There is only a small amount of wealth in the Brahmin household obtained through the path of Dharma. Therefore, you should love and respect each other. Strive to practice discipline and celibacy. Strive to study the Vedas. Do not cut off the hopes of relatives, friends, and beggars. Devote yourselves to the Dharma and dwell well at home. Always strive to tame yourselves. Strive to study the recited scriptures. Give alms well, Practice the asceticism of the household. If you do so, your fame will increase. Dharma, politics, and happiness will also increase. There will also be happiness in the next life. Therefore, be mindful and dwell at home. Then, his brothers heard that he was going to renounce, and their hearts were tormented by the sorrow of fearing separation. Covering their faces with tears of sorrow, they prostrated to him and said to him:

Having spoken thus, they said, "Our wounds of grief from being separated from our parents have not yet healed, and we are oppressed by other sufferings. You should not stir up the wounds here. While the wounds of grief for our parents have not yet healed in our hearts, it is better to abandon this steadfast mind. Do not destroy our wounds. However, if you do not wish to stay at home and the path of dwelling in the forest is one of happiness, having abandoned us, the unprotected, in our home, why do you delight in dwelling alone in the forest? Therefore, wherever you go, we will also go there, and we will also renounce." Having spoken thus, the Bodhisattva said, "Most people who are not accustomed to solitary places and who follow after attachment to desires regard renunciation as falling into an abyss. Therefore, knowing the difference between dwelling at home and dwelling in the forest, do not speak of dwelling in renunciation for our sake. If you wish to renounce in this way, you also wish to renounce." Then the seven sons and one daughter, all eight of them, abandoned the great and beautiful enjoyments of the household, as well as friends, family, and relatives whose faces were filled with tears, and they renounced in the ascetic forest. One of their friends, and a beloved male servant and female servant, also renounced after them. They dwelt in a large solitary forest, where a large lake was adorned with many lotuses blooming like a burning flame. Many water lilies were blooming, arranged like a painting. Many bees relied on the edge of a clear blue stream. The huts of leaves were exceedingly clean and pleasing, shaded by trees, each separated from the others, striving diligently in asceticism and discipline, and abiding with their minds engaged in meditation. Every five days, they would gather before the Bodhisattva to listen to the Dharma. The Bodhisattva also taught them the means of entering into meditation, showing the faults of desire, causing them to become weary and averse, greatly praising solitude and contentment, and denouncing faults such as hypocrisy, flattery, and laziness.
