With joy filling his heart, he thought, "I should have been able to see such a generous beggar a long time ago." These Brahmins do not need such an elephant king. It must be that a greedy and jealous king, disturbed by these faults, sent them to confuse my mind. Disregarding fame and Dharma, he has been helping me all along. I must not disappoint that king's intentions." Having decided thus, the great Bodhisattva quickly descended from that supreme elephant and said, "Please accept," and handed over the golden ball, sitting before them. For the sake of acquiring wealth, the king who is contrary to the path of Dharma, even though he is skilled in all kinds of learning, gave the elephant because of his love for Dharma. Because of his upright conduct and joy, he was not swayed. The elephant was beautifully adorned with a golden net, and he gave that elephant, which was like autumn clouds flashing with lightning, and the son of the lord of men was very happy. The city dwellers who loved the path of righteousness were in turmoil. Then, having heard that the elephant king had been given away, the old Brahmins of the Shivi country, the ministers belonging to the court, the soldiers, and the city leaders, clamorously came to King Kuntijaya and, being hasty, unbearable, and angry, said: "O God, why have you abandoned such a supreme glory of kingship? It is not right for you, O God, to tolerate such a decline of the kingdom." The king hastily asked, "What is wrong with this?" They said again, "O God, do you not know? Its cheeks bulge and make a sound, the silver fragrance is touched by the wind, and it can subdue other drunken and arrogant elephants without any difficulty. Its radiance can suppress your enemies, suppress power and might, and render them useless. By giving away this elephant that can conquer all, your symbol of victory has gone to another country. The king should give banners, gold, clothes, and food to the Brahmins. The great

Having given away, the giving is most courageous. How will the king's glory proceed with this path that goes against the norm? This is abandonment, harmful to you. Your enemies will rejoice in front. Having heard this, the king, out of love for his son, was slightly displeased with them, but because of the need, even though displeased, he said to act in this way. Then the king consoled the people of the Shivi country (Shivi, ancient Indian place name) and said: All giving has begun, and I know that he does not look at the order of the norm. It is not appropriate to abandon him in this way, allowing him to rule the kingdom. This son has already given away his elephant, and like something vomited, he wants to take it back as if it were abandoned. However, in any case, he should be made aware of the limits of giving, and you should not make such a fuss. The people of Shivi said: Great King, all giving has begun, and it is impossible to reverse the vow just by talking about such things. All Victors said: Then what else can I do? Who is very happy to do evil, and who considers the stable qualities as faults? For that elephant, my son, should I kill him or imprison him, what should I do? Therefore, do not threaten and fuss about this. I will not allow everything to be done like this after the giving has begun. Then the people of the Shivi country (Shivi, ancient Indian place name) became angry and said to the king: Lord of men, who would want to kill, imprison, or beat this prince of yours? This son is attached to the Dharma, is the embodiment of compassion, and he cannot fully rule the country. Relying on the three realms, with great majesty, gaining fame, he deserves the throne of the lion. Disregarding the norm and being very fond of the Dharma, this son is suitable to live in the forest in asceticism. The faults of the lords of the earth will befall those who depend on them, but those faults cannot be remedied. If the chief lord of the earth declines, it cannot be remedied. There is no need to say much about this, the people of Shivi (Shivi, ancient Indian place name) cannot bear the decline of your regime, and they have decided in this way. In order for the son of the king of men to increase his asceticism, the mountain rock taught by the Buddha was exiled. Those who suspect that it is not in accordance with the norm and like to benefit sentient beings refuted.
