How can I reverse this decline? The faces of those who come begging due to poverty, their countenances withered and darkened by dashed hopes, like withered lotuses battered by blizzards, no one remembers me because of displeasure. This body of mine, which has grown without letting demons devour it, let it be given away as flesh and blood. If the poor come, I think it is reasonable. Where else can I seek other than that? The flesh of my own dead body is without warmth, and the blood is no longer there either. With the mind tormented by the heat of boiling, it will not be well pleased by that. How shall I seek the flesh of the living? These have come to me, suffering from hunger, their eyes blurred with thirst, their faces withered, their minds distressed by the fruitlessness of begging and hope, what is to be done even if they fall again? Therefore, now is the time, this body is like a malignant sore that is always festering, a source of disease. By using this body in a special way, one must endure the suffering of treatment. Having determined thus, the king became exceedingly joyful, and with a good countenance and radiance on his face, he showed his body and said to those yakshas: This flesh and blood of mine is held for the benefit of all beings. If it is fit to be a guest today, then it will be attained by me. Then, those yakshas, knowing the king's extraordinary intention, were exceedingly amazed and could not believe it. They said to the king: Because of poverty, our suffering is revealed; because of begging and humility, our plight is exposed. Therefore, may the giver himself know when the time is right. Then the king thought, "Now these ones want to be happy," and with great joy in his heart, he commanded, "Summon the physicians to eradicate (hunger)!" Then the king's ministers, knowing that the king was giving away his flesh and blood, became agitated. Unable to bear it and with their minds disturbed, they spoke a little of such a matter out of affection: O God, you are too fond of giving, and it is not right that you do not see the benefit and harm to your close subjects. O God, you are not unaware of these things, but because it harms beings.

What causes harm to whom? Those things please the yakshas. They live by harming others and rejoice. Such are their race and nature. For the sake of the world, this glory of the kingdom, Do not cling to comfort, may the gods protect it. Therefore, I offer my flesh, but you see that I have embarked on a wrong path. Heroic one, the world protected by your power, Cannot tolerate the demons devouring. These who are skilled at destruction, Want to destroy beings with righteousness. Even the thirty-three gods are pleased by burning oil and the like during sacrifices. Even if your food is abundant, And offered with reverence, they will not desire it. The minds of the gods are not contrived by beings like us, However, for our sake, to cherish us, we have become so wretchedly begging. For the sake of these five yakshas, should all subjects be left without protection? What path of dharma is this kind of god? Furthermore, why are you not kind to us? For the sake of the king, we have prepared All the flesh and blood, Is it because we previously hid something and did not offer it, that the gods do not grant it? Then the king said to those ministers: How can we say that something is not there when it is there? How can people like us say that? To a request that is earnest and clear, How can one say that one will not give? If I were to first embark on an evil path, Then what would become of My subjects who follow my actions? This is also for the sake of beings, I will extract the essence from my body. If my mind is robbed by stinginess, What merit is there for the sake of beings? You have said to me with respect, love, and humility: Why are you not kind to us? Even though we have ample flesh and blood, The gods do not grant it, I will tell you that. I am not distant from you, nor am I unkind to you, Nor do I fear not giving, But if wealth gradually diminishes, Or if it is exhausted due to lack of merit, Then to friends
