Because of delighting in extreme solitude, the island called Kuru is located in the southern ocean, moved by the waves and wind of the sea, like fragments of sapphire, surrounded by scattered green, the ground covered with gray sand, various kinds of trees, adorned with flowers, fruits, and leaves, making it beautiful, residing in a place with clean drinking water, dwelling in asceticism, and becoming glorious. That beautiful body, thinned by asceticism, appears beautiful there. Like the waxing moon in the sky, great radiance also appears in the sky. Behavior and senses are very peaceful and subdued, firmly committed to ascetic vows, dwelling in the forest. Conquered by those of small intellect, birds and wild animals also surround him. Then, that great being, although dwelling in the forest of asceticism, because of being very accustomed to giving, if occasional visitors come, with as many roots and fruits as possible, and clean water, and with the words "You have come well," expresses auspiciousness, pleasing, worshiped by ascetics. For those who arrive occasionally, eating the leftovers after hosting them, eating what grows in the forest for sustenance, and dwelling there. The fame of his supreme asceticism spread, and Indra, the lord of the gods, became very pleased, in order to test whether that great Bodhisattva was steadfast or would regress, gradually made all the roots and fruits, etc., that ascetics could eat in that solitary place disappear. The Bodhisattva also, because his mind was focused on meditation, accustomed to contentment, not greedy for food, and not attached to the body, did not take the reason for those things disappearing to heart. He cooked young tree leaves, used them to satisfy the need for food, not being greedy, nor seeking special food, dwelling there with a happy mind. Possessing the steadfast nature of contentment, it is not difficult to find sustenance anywhere. Grass and leaves are the dwelling place of beaks, there is nowhere where they are not. As he lived like that, Indra, the lord of the gods himself, became very amazed in his mind, in order to test those very steadfast qualities, in that solitary forest, the trees

All my trees were stripped of all their leaves, as if swept by the spring wind. Then, that Bodhisattva gathered the few remaining fallen and withered leaves, boiled them in water, and ate them without any displeasure, satisfying his mind with the bliss of meditation there, abiding like nectar. Having heard much, he is without pride; possessing wealth, he is without miserliness; forest dwellers, through contentment, are the supreme ornament of virtue. Then, because of his steadfast and wondrous contentment, Indra was greatly astonished, as if summoned. When that great being arrived at noon, the fire sacrifice was finished, and the recitation was complete, he looked around to see if anyone had suddenly arrived. Indra, the lord of the gods, transformed into the form of a Brahmin and appeared before him as if arriving suddenly. The Bodhisattva was overjoyed and came before him, saying sweet words such as, "It is good that you have come here!" and indicated that it was time for a meal, inviting him as a guest. He understood that he had accepted by not speaking. The great being, desiring to give, with eyes wide open and a radiant smile, gladdened him with pleasing and melodious words, and gave him all the things he had found with difficulty and cooked, and he himself was satisfied with joy. He entered into meditation in that way and spent the day with joy and contentment. Then, Indra came before him in the same way as an ascetic for the next two and three days. He was also very pleased and made offerings to him in the same way. The virtues of desiring to give, born from the habit of compassion, even if suffering befalls life, will never become base and dejected. Then, Indra was greatly astonished in his mind, thinking, "This one, through great asceticism, could achieve the glory of the lord of the thirty-three gods simply by wishing it." Therefore, he arose with doubt and fear, manifested his wondrous and beautiful divine form, and asked him the purpose of his asceticism. Attachment to relatives and close friends becomes a cause of happiness.
