The suffering of the poor burns my heart here. My home, which has long brought happiness through generosity and reverence, sees itself separated from wealth. Like thirst arriving at the edge of a dried-up lake, what will become of my poor ones? Then, I, the Bodhisattva, with steadfast resolve, did not let my mind of dejection and joy be pacified. Even in that situation, recognizing that I was not accustomed to begging, yet feeling ashamed to ask others, I thought, 'Begging is such a difficult thing.' Therefore, he became even more compassionate towards those who beg. Then, that great being, relying merely on saying "Welcome" to those who came to beg, took up the rope for binding and the sickle, and with the meager income earned from selling grass each day, he satisfied the begging of the poor. Then, Indra, the lord of the gods, seeing that he had become extremely impoverished, yet was not discouraged in the least and was extremely devoted to generosity, was greatly astonished and respectful. Manifesting his divine body, he remained in the sky and, in order to dissuade him from generosity, spoke to the great Bodhisattva: Householder, compassionate one, in such a regrettable situation, what you are experiencing due to excessive generosity is not being stolen by thieves, nor being burned by water or fire, nor have the kings plundered your wealth. Therefore, for your benefit, I say, please relinquish your attachment to generosity. Even if it is like this, if you do not give, you will obtain the good fortune of the past. Even if the loss is reduced, if you always use it, if you use it for a long time, look, even eye medicine will run out. If you accumulate it, look, even an ant nest will become tall. If you want to prosper, it is best to be frugal. Then, the Bodhisattva, in order to show the merit of generosity, said to Indra: O Thousand-Eyed One, even if one becomes extremely impoverished, it is extremely difficult for a noble one to practice base conduct. The mind of miserliness that arises in order to obtain something, Indra, even if I do not have those riches, it is alright. For one who wishes to walk the path of overcoming the suffering of begging, which is like death, who would say that he lacks poverty, nobility, and majesty, and strike him with the hail of miserliness? Tormented by begging, his face turned black, the poor ones

That which is stable and unchanging, wealth or the precious kingdom of the gods, such things, how could I be attached to them? If the fault of stinginess increases, and the mind of giving does not arise, those like me should abandon it. Using poverty as an excuse to cling, wealth is as impermanent as lightning. It is shared with everyone, the cause of many poverties. The cause of happiness arising is generosity. What kind of virtuous person would rely on the path of stinginess? Hundred-thousand gods, you show me friendship, speak beneficial words, and are kind to me. Giving makes the mind happy and accustomed, besides that, who would be happy? If your mind arises with anger, it is unreasonable to enter the path. The path of opposing nature, it is difficult to travel and not easy to dwell in. Hundred-thousand gods said: Householder, wealth is complete, the storehouse is full, the fields are well cultivated, and various great deeds are done, for those who have power and authority, these sequences will flourish in the world. Such a situation is not allowed, look! I am competent with wisdom and not distracted, or in accordance with fame, in accordance with lineage, or having obtained wealth through the merits of work, like the sun suppressing the light of competitors, people incidentally seek friends, make relatives including friends happy, and even receive more respect than the king, if embraced by wealth like obvious attachment, then entering the sequence of giving or happiness, one will not be ridiculed by people. Like wanting to fly into the sky with incomplete wings, just wanting to give will be destroyed. Therefore, one should guard and not be distracted, dwell in place, and temporarily give away wealth and so on. What is more base than not giving without wealth? Bodhisattva said: You are like this, don't give up too early. With the mind of benefiting others, whoever values their own benefit more, they should also abandon wealth and practice giving. Whoever abandons attachment and is happy to give, even with great wealth cannot experience that joy. One cannot attain higher realms by relying solely on wealth.
