So it is. In the city called the Dharma King, people hung garlands of lamps. On the second day, the monks were honored with food and drink, and umbrellas of flowers were hung. Having done this, he came out of the city of the Dharma King, surrounded by a large crowd, and went to the place where the other stone slab was. Sitting there, he took out the golden box and said: Whoever is happy, take this golden box and pluck out my eyes. But no one was willing at all. At this time, King Ashoka saw in a dream two naked, yellow-eyed men gouging out the eyes of a young man. He saw the same scene as in the dream, as if they were coming from afar. So he said: O citizens, these men will gouge out my eyes. The young man called the two men and asked: Are you willing to gouge out my eyes? The two men said: If you are happy, we can even cut off your head, let alone two eyes like water bubbles? Then the young man stood up from his seat, folded his palms, and began to ask all those present for forgiveness. Whatever I have done as a child, or because of excessive power, or because of irrationality, those things that have lost their splendor and are very painful, please forgive me with compassion. Furthermore, even if you have seen various sights, please forgive me for being impure and causing harm to all young people. At that time, the young man clearly recited the words of the abbot. Afterwards, he said while recalling: Who knows this decay? To all who have eyes, he said: Look carefully at impermanence. That is what that speaker said. That is my spiritual friend, who wants me to benefit. Whoever preaches this Dharma, he will remain steadfast in poverty. Because of impermanence and change, it is not eternal. The teacher has taught, so please remember. Because these things are inherently moving, I am not afraid of your harm today. As the landowner wishes, you gouge out my eyes. Through impermanence etc., obtain the unpolluted essence.

My eyes are yours. Then he said to Kunla, 'Hey, young man, please gouge out one of my eyes and put it in my hand.' The young man began to gouge out Kunla's eyes. Then, hundreds of thousands of creatures began to utter cries of pain: 'Alas, suffering!' This immaculate, radiant moon has fallen from the sky. From the forest of white lotuses, a glorious lotus also emerges. Then, like that, hundreds of thousands of creatures, he gouged out one of Kunla's eyes and put it in his hand. Then, the young man took the eye and, fully admonishing it, said: 'By the power of the great elements, and from the cause of karma, this has arisen. Lifeless, without life, empty, devoid of the nature of human life.' Like a lump of flesh in the past, why do you not see form now? The unwise who hold you as their own, those who deceive them should be blamed. Like bubbles and foam, extremely fragile and without autonomy. Thus, seeing is always without pride, and thus, suffering will no longer be seen.' Thus contemplating, he saw all things as impermanent, and the assembly of people also knew that he had attained the fruit of entering the stream. Then, the young man, having seen the truth, said to that man: 'Be at ease, as you wish, gouge out the second eye as well!' The young man gouged out the second eye and put it in Kunla's hand. Then, Kunla gouged out his physical eyes, and with pure Dharma eyes, he said: 'Although I have gouged out my physical eyes, this is very difficult to obtain.' Thus, the supreme eye is pure, immaculate, and I have obtained it. Although the king has abandoned his own son's consideration, he has become the son of the Dharma King, and has attained great liberation. Although he has declined from power, he has abandoned sorrow and suffering, and has attained the Dharma King who destroys suffering and sorrow.' Then, seeing Kunla gouge out his eyes, the great assembly of people cried out in unison, some tearing their clothes and ornaments, and some rolling on the ground.

Some people took sticks and mallets in their hands, striving to destroy those two men. Others completely cursed the king, saying: Alas, king, you possess the power of anger! Alas, king, you lack wisdom! Alas, king, you possess the arrogance of power! Even your only son, you have placed in such a situation! They spoke in such various ways and entered the city. Soon, Kunala heard: This is not the order of King Ashoka, but rather the plot of the queen (Tissarakkha). Having heard this, he spoke again: Who treats this plot with respect? Who experiences it and seeks their own benefit? May the one called king be happy for a long time, and may the goddess's life and power be protected! Then, he heard that the golden-garlanded woman had gouged out Kunala's eyes. Having heard this, she went to Kunala out of love for her husband, dismissing the attendants. When she saw Kunala's eyes gouged out and his body filled with blood, she fainted and fell to the ground. After a while, she was revived by being sprinkled with water. Then, when she regained consciousness, she wept loudly with a wailing voice, saying: How pleasing were your eyes! When I looked at them, I was very happy. But now, they look frightening to me, and they dispel all the sorrow in my heart. Then, Kunala spoke to his wife with affection: It is not reasonable to rely on sorrow, stop crying! Why? Because this is the ripening of the fruit of one's own actions. Understand that this world is impermanent, and beings are full of suffering. If you understand this, you will not cling to being separated from suffering. Therefore, it is not right to shed tears because of sorrow. Furthermore, my eyes have been gouged out, what should I do now? Go to my relatives! And do not make yourself a recipient of suffering. The golden-garlanded woman said: It is not surprising that when a man is wealthy, a woman follows him out of love. But when a man loses his wealth, the woman who still follows him is like a god among men. Then, Kunala and his wife left the city together, and from the time she was pregnant, she possessed a very youthful body, doing whatever work...
