When King Ajatasatru was living very indulgently on the foundation of the upper floor of the palace, he made it known by the sound of a bell and spoke clearly: "Great King, it is not good that you have not personally examined the young golden one. Now, without causing harm or committing any crime, he has been taken from the royal palace and carried to the great cemetery to be killed. Prevent this!" Then, hearing the words of the Venerable Ananda, the king hastily bowed to the Venerable Ananda, who was sitting on the upper floor of the palace, stood up, and shouted loudly in all directions: "Listen, those who are hurrying to the great cemetery! Whoever releases the young golden one who is about to be killed with words, I will offer a great golden bridge and the five best places of the land." Hearing the king's words, the young man was so pleasing to many people that hundreds of thousands of creatures rushed to him. Then, in the meantime, the executioners, guarded by the king's messengers, took the young golden one and went to the great cemetery. The daughter named Kashi, the beautiful and joyful one, was also carried by her relatives in a palanquin decorated with blue, yellow, red, and white clothes to the great cemetery, and her relatives placed her on one side. They began to gather wood and build a pyre for cremation. The executioners said: "Do not build the pyre for cremation for a while. Wait a moment until you have harmed our young golden one on the stake and killed him." Why? Because they said that the young golden one and the daughter Kashi, the beautiful and joyful one, should be placed on the same pyre and burned, and then they were impaled on the stake. The young golden one, seeing the stake planted in the ground, remembered his mother, and intense suffering disturbed his mind, and tears began to flow. What will become of him when he hears of being separated from his mother like this? Even if he does not see his mother at midnight on the first night, he experiences very intense suffering, today

How can I live if I am separated from my only child? Alas, I am such an unfortunate one! Because of my birth, I have experienced the suffering of being separated from my mother. Then the executioners planted the gallows in the ground and began to speak to each other: "Which of us will bind this youth to the gallows?" Then each of them began to make excuses: "You bind him! I am very afflicted with a headache today." "Likewise, my back hurts." "My armpit hurts," they said, and none of them were willing to do what was not to be done. Then the golden youth heard them speaking to each other and looked at the gallows planted in the ground, thinking, "Alas, now I will surely be no more." He was saddened by the faults of samsara and desired the path of liberation, and knowing that he would be separated from happiness, he looked with eyes moved by supreme fear and sorrow, and began to wail: "Alas, suffering! Now I will die without having done anything meaningful, having obtained this feast of the holy Dharma that is so difficult to obtain! Alas, I will revolve in samsara again! Again I will dwell in the great prison of samsara! Again I will wander completely in the empty wilderness of samsara! Again I will enter the great thicket of samsara! Again I will fall utterly into the great precipice of samsara! Again I will dwell in the mire of samsara! Again I will be born in the hells such as Yangsos, Thiknag, Dusjom, Ngubo, Ngubo Chenpo, Tsawa, Rabtu Tsawa, and Narmed! Again I will be born as elephants, cattle, buffaloes, rabbits, Sharaba, deer, cats, and various other life forms! Again I will always suffer great suffering such as hunger and thirst, and be afflicted by torment and discomfort, and I will not even hear the sounds of food and drink, and I will eat excrement, urine, saliva, mucus, and other impure things, and be born as a Yaksha with tumors in my armpits. For example, like the Udumbara tree...

Just as flowers appear occasionally on a hundred roads, so too, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, appears in the world only occasionally on a hundred roads. Having heard this, I understand that it is also rare for the Dharma and Vinaya taught by the Tathagata to appear in the world. Leisure and endowment are difficult to obtain. Birth as a human is difficult to obtain. Birth in a noble land, having complete faculties, not being foolish, not being deaf, not being mute, not speaking with gestures, speaking well, and explaining the meaning of well-spoken and ill-spoken teachings are difficult to hear. I am without refuge and will now die. Even the human birth, freed from the eight unfree states, will now become meaningless. What should I do now? Is there not a Bhagavan Buddha with great compassion, whom I can remember to save me from this state of being without protector, without refuge, without help, without relatives, without light, extremely miserable, and threatened by suffering, who would come with the power of great compassion and completely protect me? But that Bhagavan, due to the evil of my bad karma, has quickly, quickly passed completely into nirvana. Who should I remember now? Who will come with great compassion like the Tathagata and completely protect me? Despairing thus, I began to tremble and think. Then, an idea arose: There is a great being named "Venerable Ananda" living, I should remember him. That great being has a great compassionate mind that is single-mindedly focused on benefiting all sentient beings. The Bhagavan and the Venerable Mahakashyapa have entrusted the entire teachings to him. I have heard that he is now benefiting all sentient beings and has great miraculous powers and great strength. Venerable Ananda, please completely save me from this poverty! I should remember him! Thinking thus, tears covered my eyes, and feeling weary of the fear of samsara, with a strong faith arising in my mind, I invite Venerable Ananda.
