Thus have I heard: After the great Elder Upagupta had completely passed into Nirvana, the great Elder Ananda, possessor of virtue, the son of Elder Sharadvati, equal in wisdom, thinking with great compassion like the Tathagata, in various places, cities, towns, markets, and so forth, he subdued those to be tamed with various different methods. Whenever, due to the power of those to be tamed, he truly satisfied countless hundreds of thousands of billions of sentient beings by showering the rain of nectar of teaching the sacred Dharma, he resided in the mango-guarding grove of the Vaisali. Also at that time, in the city of Rajgir, there lived a shipmaster named Sun, who was rich, wealthy, had great possessions, had vast and extensive holdings, possessed the wealth of Vaishravana, one who rivaled Vaishravana in wealth. There, having taken a wife from the same lineage, he would play with her, delight, and enjoy himself. He played, delighted, and enjoyed himself, but had neither son nor daughter. Because he had no son, he greatly desired a son and was utterly tormented. At that time, among the gods of the Thirty-Three (Trayastrimsa), a son of the gods possessed of great power of merit had five signs of death arise. Having looked upon the world adorned by the arising of the Buddha, desiring to be manifestly pleased with Nirvana, he desired to be joined in the human realm. How should I act so that the caravan leader develops faith in the teachings of the Buddha? The son of the gods said: Kausika, if the caravan leader and his wife together take refuge in the Three Jewels for as long as they live, then he should take rebirth in the womb of that caravan leader's wife. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, disappeared from the Thirty-Three Heavens, and in the city of Rajagriha, he appeared on the foundation of the upper room of the house of the caravan leader Nyima. By the power of the radiance of the lord of the gods, Indra, that entire house was illuminated by divine light. The caravan leader Nyima saw and gazed at that divine light, and with wonder opened his eyes wide and thought to look in the four directions. When he saw the lord of the gods, Indra, he immediately prostrated to his two feet and said: That you have come to my house and made this house like this is a very good gain indeed! Please tell me what is the intention of your coming here? The lord of the gods, Indra, said: Caravan leader, you are without a son, but if you are truly happy to have a son, then from today onwards, together with your wife, take refuge in the Three Jewels for as long as you live! You will have a son. The caravan leader Nyima, with a mind of joy, satisfaction, and great delight, said: Lord of the gods, I shall do as you have commanded, from today onwards, together with my wife, I shall take refuge in the Three Jewels for as long as I live. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, arranged for the caravan leader Nyima and his wife to take refuge, and then disappeared from Rajagriha, and returned to the abode of the Thirty-Three Heavens, seated in the palace of that son of the gods.
