Then, sprinkling water and regaining breath, he rose and, facing the direction where the Blessed One had passed into complete nirvana, began to lament in a loud voice: Alas, omniscient King of Dharma! Subduer of the hosts of sinful enemies! Having abandoned beings without protectors! Why has the protector of the world departed? Alas, renowned as the accomplisher! The sole friend of all sentient beings! Perfectly transcended all fabrications! The guide to the path of nirvana! Alas, alas, this world! Whose eyes are covered by ignorance! Because you, the protector, have departed! Has become completely wandering in samsara. Hero, cherishing others with compassion! Because you have passed into nirvana! This world has become without a protector, who will it rely on as a protector? Those who have arisen from your Dharma, the sons of the Victorious One who are to be tamed, since all of them have become separated from you, where will they dwell? You who made the aspirations of many fruitful! Having certainly subdued suffering! Severing the hopes of beings! Where have you gone, O Sage? Since there is no city filled with joy to hear your teachings, now that you have passed into nirvana, who will continue to teach the sacred Dharma? Alas, illuminator of this world! The world together with humans and non-humans! The protector who is extremely difficult to find! The Sage, you have departed, and the world is destroyed. Sentient beings who delight in the Dharma, those who delight in the teachings, O protector, since you have attained nirvana, how will they act? Hero, one with compassion! Relying on you, who are full of love, who has obtained qualities, who will teach them again? For the sake of the three worlds, generating great compassion, possessing wisdom and love for this world, why have you relied on equanimity? Alas, qualities increase like jewels, what has been accumulated over countless eons, is seized by the lord of death, and the ship of Dharma will capsize. Alas, the darkness of ignorance, separated from wisdom and the teacher, the protector who protects the world, is utterly destroyed and exhausted. Alas, the great world is near to ruin, the precious great Buddha, has now departed.

Has passed away! Like a herd of cattle without a leader, your monastic community is empty. Seeing the wise ones, the heart aches, why have you passed away? The gods, with devout faith, offer the essence of their limbs, prostrating upon your head, what essence of the dust of your feet will ever perish? You, with equal love for all beings, still do not overlook those who always cause harm because of partiality. With medicine possessing eight branches, you are the healer of afflictive diseases, the teacher, you possess great compassion, the king of medicine has passed away! Alas! Merciless protector of the world, Nirvana is too early! For the world that has become blind, you are the one who bestows the unsurpassed eye. Even though you have passed into Nirvana, now, the great son of wealth, without sin, is abandoned for the purpose of being killed, then who will immediately attain liberation? You are the protector of the unprotected, having passed away to the most excellent state, alas! Now there is no hope of survival. Great Self, you promised that you would be separated from all suffering, you bestowed the sacred words, and now I know that those were such wonderful words! In this way, uttering lamentations in many ways, he said to that layperson: 'Alas! Blessed One, are there still some of his great Shravaka disciples remaining?' To whom did the Blessed One entrust the teachings before passing into Nirvana? Then that layperson said: 'The Teacher, the Blessed One, completely entrusted the teachings to the Venerable Great Kashyapa, and then passed into Nirvana.' It is heard that the Venerable Great Kashyapa also, by the command of the Blessed One, entrusted the teachings to the Venerable Ananda, and then passed into Nirvana. Now the Venerable Ananda is a great self, cherishing the teachings, and he is now, like the Tathagata, with compassion, going to various villages, cities, towns, and marketplaces, and taking care of those suffering beings.' Similarly, for those beings who have not yet generated roots of virtue, he causes them to generate roots of virtue. For those who have truly accumulated the stream of roots of virtue, he causes them to fully ripen. For those whose stream of roots of virtue has fully ripened, he causes them to
