How can you be indifferent to the suffering that is so close to me? It is not reasonable. Why, like an empty wilderness, in the middle of the city, without investigation, do you watch as my young son, like a display of his clear talents, is taken away to be killed? Why remain silent out of timidity? Why not consider a thorough method of rescue? Why not strive to free the youth?" They replied: "Merchant leader, this youth with such qualities is not only causing you suffering, but we are all suffering as well. However, we have not found a way to free this youth, and so we remain in such despair." The merchant leader Sun said: "Wise ones, you all know very well how compassionate this youth is, how great, how desirous of Dharma, how gentle to all beings.
