If asked, the guest is the third branch. For someone who eats any of the five kinds of food, inviting them as a guest whether it's today, tomorrow, or whenever they are happy, that is a guest. A mendicant is someone who abandons going as a guest. Accepting guests destroys mendicancy. How does one correctly uphold the practice of sequential alms-seeking? Regarding continuous offerings, wherever one finds abundant and plentiful continuous food, one correctly upholds that place. If one goes, it is like continuous food, and one also sees the fault of not being frugal with utensils. One also sees the virtues of sequential alms-seeking, and then one says: From now on, I will abandon continuous offerings and correctly uphold sequential alms-seeking. Among these, the virtues of sequential alms-seeking are these: having equanimity of mind, having compassion for sentient beings, abandoning stinginess towards one's home, having no faults in going to homes, not being pleased by invitations, not choosing good food, being completely liberated from attachment to people, completely abandoning communal enjoyment, and having the aspect of frugality with utensils. Such things and others are the virtues of sequential alms-seeking. What is sequential alms-seeking? What does one abandon with disordered alms-seeking? What destroys sequential alms-seeking? Sequential alms-seeking is when one is seized by the first house while practicing alms-seeking, and one practices sequential alms-seeking in houses. Sequential alms-seeking is abandoning disordered alms-seeking. Disordered alms-seeking destroys sequential alms-seeking. How does one correctly uphold the practice of eating one meal in one sitting? Sitting twice, if eating, one sits again and again to give and receive, and also the food that is fully enjoyed. One also sees the fault of not being frugal with utensils, and one also accepts the virtues of eating one meal in one sitting, and then one does not accept again. Not accepting food afterwards is abandoning leftover food. Eating leftover food destroys not accepting food afterwards. How does one correctly uphold the practice of dwelling in a solitary place? If one dwells at the edge of a village, one also sees the faults of being disturbed by undesirable objects, and of generating attachment and dwelling in clinging. One also sees the virtues of dwelling in a solitary place, and then one says:

I will henceforth abandon living on the edge of the village and truly take up residence in the monastery. The virtues of being a monastery dweller are these: completely abandoning undesirable objects, truly expounding the ten grounds of speech, being exceedingly beautiful, being exhorted by the gods, not seeking pleasure in commotion, obtaining the desired bliss of solitude, being in harmony with yoga due to quietness, being the conduct of noble beings, and having the quality of reducing possessions. Such are the virtues of being a monastery dweller. What is the boundary of a monastery dwelling? Who is a monastery dweller? What destroys being a monastery dweller? Except for villages, the vicinity of villages, gardens, and the vicinity of gardens, four cubits of an average person form an arc; five hundred such arcs are the boundary of a monastery dwelling. A monastery dweller is one who abandons living on the edge of the village. How does one truly take up living under a tree? By fully embracing living in the shade, not making repairs, not begging from others, and also seeing the faults of enjoyment, and also seeing the virtues of living under a tree, one says: From now on, abandoning living in the shade, I will truly take up living under a tree. The virtues of living under a tree are these: Abiding by vows, being harmonious, reducing possessions, completely abandoning the desire to work, being exhorted by the gods, abandoning stinginess towards dwellings, completely abandoning attachment, being the conduct of noble beings, and reducing possessions. Such are the virtues of living under a tree. What is the measure of under a tree? What kind of tree should be abandoned? Who is a tree dweller? What destroys being a tree dweller? The extent to which the shadow covers at noon, and the extent to which leaves fall without wind, that is the measure of under a tree. A tree dweller should abandon old trees, hollow trees, and dangerous trees. A tree dweller is one who abandons living in the shade. One who lives in the shade is a tree
