Therefore, as the Blessed One said, what is a dhuta practitioner? It is based on having few desires, based on contentment, based on the qualities of austerity, based on being completely secluded. Based on this contentment, one becomes a dhuta practitioner. Thus it is said. On the other hand, after not being attached, it is appropriate to rely on what is permitted, therefore, diligence after begging for desires eliminates deception, and the merit of practice, being without ignorance, is appropriate to rely on the qualities of austerity, therefore, diligence after one's own exhaustion eliminates deception. Therefore, there are two practices: non-attachment and non-ignorance. Among them, having few desires, contentment, and being completely secluded are non-attachment. The qualities of austerity and contentment with this are non-ignorance. Among them, non-attachment eliminates attachment to the thirteen things to be abandoned, and non-ignorance eliminates not knowing the faults of those things themselves. Furthermore, what kind of practitioners are happy to rely on the merits of practice? Those who practice desire and those who practice ignorance are happy to rely on the merits of practice, but not those who practice hatred. Why is it that those who practice desire and those who practice ignorance rely on the merits of practice, but not those who practice hatred? Relying on the merits of practice is something that is easy to accomplish, so those who practice desire, relying on what is easy to accomplish, will be able to subdue desire. Those who practice ignorance are also like that, relying on the qualities of austerity that are properly taken and abandoned in the practice of merit, they will always be careful, and if they are careful, they will be able to subdue ignorance. Therefore, those who practice desire and those who practice ignorance are happy to rely on the merits of practice, but if those who practice hatred are happy to accomplish it, it is like giving warmth to a person with bile disease, and hatred will arise again, therefore, those who practice hatred are not happy to rely on the merits of practice. Others say that those who practice hatred are suitable to live in secluded places and under trees. Why? If one lives in a secluded place and under a tree, there is no fault because there is no harm of displeasure in those places. The limbs of practice are

What is called "the ultimate of time"? The three branches of asceticism, namely living under a tree, being without shelter, and being a charnel ground dweller, should be practiced for a period of eight months. The Blessed One allowed that in summer one may dwell in a covered place. Is that which is asceticism, is that also what is called asceticism? Asceticism is. Is that which is called asceticism also that? Asceticism is, and there are also those who speak of asceticism. There are those who are not asceticism, nor do they speak of asceticism. There are also those who are not asceticism, nor do they speak of asceticism. So, what is it that is both asceticism and is also called asceticism? It refers to an Arhat who possesses the quality of having fully embraced asceticism. What is it that is not asceticism, but is called asceticism? It refers to an Arhat who does not possess the quality of having fully embraced asceticism. What is it that is asceticism, but is not called asceticism? It refers to a trainee or an ordinary person who possesses the quality of having fully embraced asceticism. What is it that is neither asceticism, nor is the quality of asceticism spoken of? It refers to a trainee or an ordinary person who does not possess the quality of having fully embraced asceticism. What is the characteristic of the quality of asceticism? What is contentment? What is abiding? The characteristic of the quality of asceticism is having few desires. Contentment is being satisfied. Abiding is reducing one's possessions. One aspect of the characteristic is being unpolluted. Contentment is being without fault. Abiding is not abandoning diligence. What is the beginning of the quality of asceticism? What is the middle? What is the end? The beginning of the quality of asceticism is taking it up correctly. The middle is relying on it. The end is rejoicing greatly. The teaching on the qualities of asceticism from "The Path of Liberation," called the Third Compilation, is complete. The Indian Abbot Vidyākaraprabha and the Lotsawa of Zhuchen, Bande Pal Tsek, translated, revised, and finalized it. Title: The Teaching on the Qualities of Asceticism from "The Path of Liberation."
