If asked what causes it to disintegrate, it is not accepting food offered afterward, which has two aspects: the extreme of leftovers and the extreme of holding. The so-called extreme of leftovers refers to the situation where one eats and discards, and does not eat again. The so-called extreme of holding refers to the share of one's own nature. Even seeing the merits of the charnel ground practitioner, one would say: From now on, abandoning living elsewhere, I will fully accept the identity of a charnel ground practitioner. These are the merits of the charnel ground practitioner: being able to remember death, being able to obtain the sign of impurity, being respected by people, being respected by non-humans, giving rise to the cause of mindfulness, completely abandoning attachment to desires, generating more revulsion, being able to endure fear and dread, abandoning pride arising from being alive, being able to repeatedly and separately contemplate the nature of the body, being the conduct of a noble person, and having a simple demeanor. Such are the merits of the charnel ground practitioner. What kind of charnel ground should one live in? Who is a charnel ground practitioner? What causes the identity of a charnel ground practitioner to disintegrate? First, one should live in a charnel ground where there is constant burning, smoke, flames, and fumes. Then, one should live in any other charnel ground. The charnel ground practitioner should not build huts or houses in the charnel ground. One should not live where the wind blows from above downwards. One should not live in a place with mosquitoes. One should not consume fish, meat, milk, sesame paste, and bean foods. One should not give alms bowls. One should not live at home. If many people gather together, one should take the cushion, Dharma robes, and pills and leave, but not too far from the burning place, within the range of a stone's throw, and live in the charnel ground. When cold arises, one should take the cushion, Dharma robes, and pills and return. This is his conduct. The charnel ground practitioner is one who has abandoned living elsewhere. Promising to live elsewhere will cause the identity of the charnel ground practitioner to disintegrate. So, how can one truly accept it as it is? One must also see the faults of the abode of greed, where they fight each other and harm others.

Oṃ. Having also seen the qualities of suchness, one says, "From now on, having abandoned the dwelling place of attachment, I will truly take up suchness." Thus, one truly takes it up. Now, the qualities of suchness are these: inwardly abiding correctly and honoring the guru, being content with what is obtained in that way, abandoning attachment to it, a mind of loving-kindness, delighting in solitude, being worthy of faith, the conduct of a noble being, having the manner of frugality, and so forth, are the qualities of suchness. What is suchness? What destroys suchness? Suchness is abandoning the dwelling place of attachment. The so-called abandoning the dwelling place of attachment means not rising from the place where one previously resided and taking up a dwelling place. If one takes up a dwelling place of attachment, suchness is destroyed. How does one truly take up sitting cross-legged? If one sleeps, one also sees the faults of dullness, sleep, and being dominated by laziness. Having also seen the qualities of sitting cross-legged, one says, "From now on, having abandoned sleep, I will truly take up sitting cross-legged." Thus, one truly takes it up. Now, the qualities of sitting cross-legged are these: completely abandoning the basis of laziness, attachment to the body, completely abandoning stinginess, not being attached to the pleasure of play, little labor, little sleep, being in harmony with yoga, the place of the body expanding, the conduct of a noble being, having the manner of frugality, and so forth, are the qualities of sitting cross-legged. What is sitting cross-legged? What destroys sitting cross-legged? Sitting cross-legged is abandoning sleep. If one accepts sleep, sitting cross-legged is destroyed. Now, concerning the exceptions for one who lives on alms, if one who lives on alms continuously begs for alms, if householders give robes, cloth for mending robes, or cotton cloth, silk, or wool, one should accept it through exceptions, so that the conduct of one who lives on alms will not decline. Concerning the exceptions for the three robes, if there is hope of supplementing them, one may keep the extra cloth for ten days, and protect the dwelling place.
