The Teaching on the Qualities of Practice from the Path of Liberation, so called. The Teaching on the Qualities of Practice from the Path of Liberation, so called. In Indian language: Bimuktimārge dhūtaguṇa nirdeśa nāma. In Tibetan language: The Teaching on the Qualities of Practice from the Path of Liberation, so called. Homage to the noble youthful Mañjuśrī! Thereafter, the yogi who thus possesses pure discipline, desiring to accomplish practice, with the aim of qualities, should truly take up and engage in the qualities of practice. The yogi's true acceptance of the qualities of practice is that which has the aspect of being fully understood in many ways, thinking thus: If even a foolish, ignorant, and unwise person knows these things, they will not generate a mind of desire, what need is there to mention one who is naturally endowed with wisdom? Such is the kind of thing I have said. It also appears in the Sūtra of Definitive Meaning: Monks, in this case, whether monks dwell in a solitary place, or dwell at the foot of a tree, or dwell in an empty room, they should individually contemplate this very body, from the soles of the feet upwards to the top of the head, as being filled with various kinds of impurities, just as it is in reality. This body contains hair, body hair, nails, teeth, dust, dirt, skin, flesh, bones, tendons, veins, kidneys, heart, lungs, liver, stomach, large intestine, small intestine, feces, bladder, phlegm, bile, snot, tears, fat, pus, blood, brain, meninges, urine, eye mucus, earwax, nail dirt, tongue dirt, and so forth, filled with various kinds of impurities, individually contemplating them as they are in reality. Monks, it is like this, for example, rice, grains, barley, wheat, peas, lentils, soybeans, rice, small beans, black beans, mustard seeds, and so on, filled with various kinds of grains.

A winnowing basket is opened on both sides, and a person with eyes puts things into it and distinguishes them one by one. If distinguished one by one, these are rice salu, these are barley, these are wheat, these are wheat, these are peas, these are lentils, these are soybeans, these are Nepali rice, these are small beans, these are black peas, these are sesame, these are husked rice, these are mustard seeds, that's how it should be known. Monks, similarly, whether dwelling in a monastery, or dwelling under a tree, or dwelling in an empty house, for this very body, from the soles of the feet upwards to the top of the head, filled with various kinds of impurities, one should truly distinguish them one by one as they are. In the Sutra Requested by Dpas-byin, it also says: For this, the Bodhisattva should examine the initial and final causes of this body separately. Arising from the combination of the semen and blood of the parents, the semen and blood of this body are the initial cause of the body. The final cause is the accumulation of food and so on. Food eaten by the mouthful, as soon as it is eaten, goes to the place of phlegm. Having gone to the place of phlegm, it is acted upon solely by phlegm and becomes very impure. After that, it goes to the place of bile, and having gone to the place of bile, it is digested and becomes sour. It goes to the place of wind. Having been digested, it goes to the place of wind, and the wind

Full of dust and teeming with creatures, who would be attached to it and respect it? For example, a child takes a piece of coal, even if he rubs it trying to make it white, it will not become a white object, but will only be worn out. Possessing the pride of a childish mind that is upside down, similarly, being impure but having thoughts of cleanliness, I also want to make this body clean, even if I anoint and wipe it and bathe in a hundred places, it will be exhausted by the power of the Lord of Death and will not become clean. Thus it is said. Also in the teachings of the noble Vimalakirti: Then, the Licchavi Vimalakirti, possessing the wisdom of being skilled in limitless means, dwelt and resided in the vast great city. Being skilled in means, he appeared as if he were ill. In order to inquire about his illness, from the vast great city, the king, ministers, youths, retinues, Brahmins, householders, merchants, villagers, and local people, and many thousands of other beings came to inquire about his illness. To those who came, the Licchavi Vimalakirti, starting from this body made of the four great elements, taught the Dharma: Friends, this body is so impermanent, so unstable, so unreliable, so fragile, so meaningless, so perishable, so short-lived, so painful, so full of disease, so subject to change. Friends, this body is a container of many diseases, the wise should not dwell on it. Friends, this body is so unbearable, like a dewdrop. This body does not last long, like a bubble in water. This body arises from the craving of afflictions, like a mirage. This body is meaningless, like the trunk of a banana tree. Alas, this body is connected by bones and tendons, like a machine. This body arises from perversion, like an illusion. This body is a vision of what is not true, like a dream. This body is an image appearing from past karma, like a reflection. This body depends on conditions, like an echo in a valley. This body is mentally disturbed.
