Living alone in one place means abandoning dwelling in two places. Being content with food means abandoning excessive eating. Not taking food after eating means abandoning leftover food. Dwelling in a secluded place means abandoning dwelling on the outskirts of villages. Dwelling under a tree means abandoning sheltered places. Having no shelter means abandoning sheltered places and dwelling under a tree. Dwelling in a cemetery means abandoning dwelling in other places. Dwelling as it is means abandoning places of attachment. Constantly sitting and not lying down means abandoning sleep. So, how does one properly take up the practice of wearing robes made of rags? Seeing the faults of seeking householder's clothes, being completely attached to them, and begging from others, and also seeing the virtues of wearing robes made of rags, one abides in coarse clothing, saying: From now on, abandoning householder's clothes, I will properly take up the practice of wearing robes made of rags. Thus, one properly takes it up. So, the virtues of wearing robes made of rags are these: abiding by vows, harmony, not depending on others, not doing what should not be done, not being overly attached when using them, having no greed, not being robbed by thieves, not being out of season, having little defilement, having a frugal demeanor, being the conduct of noble beings, having the virtue of bringing joy, later practitioners seeing it will follow, manifesting correct practice, being praised by the Buddhas. Like these are the virtues of wearing robes made of rags. How many kinds of robes made of rags are there? What is a robe made of rags? What destroys the practice of wearing robes made of rags? There are two kinds of robes made of rags: ownerless objects and those that are reviled by people of nature. Among them, picking up scraps of cloth from cemeteries, piles of refuse, heaps of garbage, or roads, sewing them together, and wearing them, this is an ownerless robe made of rags. Those that are torn by insects, gnawed by rats, eaten by cows, burned by fire, patched, shrouds of corpses, or marked with the signs of heretics, these are self-

It is the rag robe that is known to be reviled by people. The rag robe is the abandonment of the clothes of householders. By taking the clothes of householders, the rag robe itself is destroyed. So, how to properly uphold the three Dharma robes? Seeing the faults of seeking extra Dharma robes, hiding them, allowing their use, and being contaminated, and also seeing the merits of the three Dharma robes themselves, one says: From now on, abandoning the fourth garment, I will properly uphold the three Dharma robes. Thus, one properly upholds them. So, the merits of the three Dharma robes themselves are these: they are easy to obtain, completely abandon accumulation, are light in burden, are content with merely sustaining life, walk freely like birds, are the conduct of noble beings, and are of the nature of reducing utensils. These and so on are the merits of the three Dharma robes themselves. What are the three Dharma robes themselves? What is the three Dharma robes themselves? What destroys the three Dharma robes themselves? Answer: the sanghati, the uttarasanga, and the antarvasa. These are the owners of the three Dharma robes. The three Dharma robes are the abandonment of the fourth garment. If one speaks of the fourth garment, the three Dharma robes themselves are destroyed. How to properly uphold alms-seeking? Having gone to someone else's house as a guest, one's own work is ruined, one is controlled by others, one encounters disharmony, and one also sees the faults of feeling afraid when residing. One also sees the merits of alms-seeking itself, and says: From now on, abandoning going to someone else's house as a guest, I will properly uphold alms-seeking. Thus, one properly upholds it. So, the merits of alms-seeking itself are these: it is of the nature of being connected to the sky, possessing autonomy, relying on others' offerings, being without laziness, destroying pride, acting for the benefit of sentient beings, returning from the craving for flavors, being unobstructed in all directions, being the conduct of noble beings, and being of the nature of reducing utensils. These and so on are the merits of alms-seeking itself. Being a guest is a branch. What is alms-seeking? What makes alms-seeking
