How does a monk who has fallen into transgression through sleep recover upon awakening? Please answer this question. This is its meaning. The determination of this is that it was spoken in consideration of the statement of actions and the faults of others. Similarly, here the text is: If a monk falls into transgression without falling asleep, how does he recover from the transgression after falling asleep? If he falls into transgression while asleep, how does he recover upon awakening? The Blessed One replied: There is. How does one fall into transgression without falling asleep and recover after falling asleep? For example, when a monk is performing the act of expelling those who have committed Sanghavasesa offenses, he hears the request and falls asleep, and when he falls asleep, the third statement of the act is completed. Thus, one falls into transgression without falling asleep and recovers after falling asleep. How does one fall into transgression while asleep and recover upon awakening? For example, a monk, after falling asleep, is placed on a high bed or a large bed, or after falling asleep, is placed on a bed by a woman, or after the third night, those who have not taken full ordination are expelled and sleep, and then those who have not taken full ordination enter underneath. He and those people, upon awakening, confess the transgression again according to the Dharma. Thus, one falls into transgression while asleep and recovers upon awakening, and so on. Regarding "sitting on one seat" etc., it refers to the question of what causes the five categories of transgressions to arise for a monk sitting on one seat. A seat refers to a bed etc., because others sit and dwell there. Sitting is dwelling. "What cause" means by what action. The categories of transgressions refer to the five categories, namely Parajika, Sanghavasesa, Pacittiya, Patidesaniya, and Dukkata. The intention of asking this is that the five categories of transgressions of mutual coming and going and actions are not seen to occur, but not merely sitting on one seat. Regarding this, you should tell me what causes these to arise.

This means that because of sitting on the same cushion, there is a possibility of generating related downfalls, so it was said that way. Similarly, here the scripture is: Venerable, will all five types of downfalls occur when a monk sits on the same cushion? The Blessed One replied: Yes, if one eats food without the Dharma garment, it will be a minor offense. If one takes things that should be prepared and eaten with one's own hands from a household of learners bound by the precepts of discipline, it will lead to individual confession. If one preaches the Dharma to women in more than five or six sentences, it will lead to a downfall. If one speaks words that lead to bad circumstances to women, it will lead to a Sanghavasesa. If one claims to have no teacher and does not possess the Dharma of an ordinary person, it will lead to a Parajika. The phrase 'a monk with one action' means how does a monk with one action cause a thousand downfalls? It should be understood in this way. One action means one deed, which is a synonym for one act. 'Thousand' means representing hundreds and thousands. Understanding this is understanding the ultimate truth, which is understanding the meaning of intention. The thought on this is that only different actions can lead to many downfalls, one action cannot, so how should it be explained? This is the meaning. The determination on this is that it refers to angrily hitting others with handfuls of sand, etc., so it was said that way. Similarly, here the scripture is: Venerable, will one action lead to a hundred downfalls or a thousand downfalls? Or more? The Blessed One replied: Yes, for example, if a monk is angry, agitated, threatening, and dissatisfied, and hits a large gathering of people with handfuls of beans, peas, or sand, however many times they are hit, that many downfalls will occur. The so-called first dhyana, etc., the first dhyana is with vitarka and vicara, and dhyana is the one-pointedness of good samadhi. The word 'etc.' is mentioned because of vitarka.
