It is not spoken within the Sangha. Therefore, this cancels the harmonious Uposatha. Blessing is to purify the continuum. If so, then will it be blessed in another's presence? One does not bless in another's presence. Having said, "Not in another's presence," etc. "Not in another's presence" means in the presence of a Bhikshu who possesses discipline and view, and is connected to "not blessing the Uposatha." Therefore, this prevents the blessing of the Uposatha. "Here" means that the Uposatha has been done. The meaning of the word here is, when a Bhikshu recites the Pratimoksha Sutra, he does not perform the Uposatha, nor does he bless it in the presence of another Bhikshu, if it is not done at that time, I am certain of that. However, the Blessed One said, "He will have done the Uposatha," how should that be explained? This is what is to be said. The determination of this is that it was said with the intention of the blessing of generating the mind. Similarly, here the text is: Venerable one, even if a Bhikshu does not speak a word, will he have performed the Uposatha? Near Attendant, yes. It is by mind. This refers to the mind. Here there is another text: Venerable one, even if a Bhikshu does not experience any of the five Uposathas, will he have performed the Uposatha, and will there be no downfall? The Blessed One said: Yes, if the Uposatha is blessed. Similarly, here there is another text: Bhikshus, these five are accomplished by generating the mind, namely, Uposatha, Pravāraṇā, blessing robes, dedicating robes, and inviting guests. "A Bhikshu who has obtained (something) for the Sangha," etc. Belonging to the Sangha is of the Sangha. "Obtained" refers to the obtaining of clothes, etc. "Alone" means without a companion. "Having taken" means having made it one's own. "Without fault" means without any downfall. Connect it with "clearly and definitely say."

Here, the meaning is that if a bhikkhu appropriates property dedicated to the Sangha, he incurs a Nissaggiya Pacittiya offense, this is certain. However, the Blessed One has said that there is no offense, how is that? This must be explained. The answer to this is: This refers to the case where a solitary dweller appropriates property, and the Blessed One spoke in that sense. Similarly, here the text is: Venerable, is it the case that a bhikkhu alone appropriates the property of the Sangha and does not incur an offense? There is (such a case): For example, a bhikkhu dwells alone, and there people offer robes for the sake of the Sangha. Similarly, here is another text: Venerable, if a bhikkhu dwells alone and there people offer robes to the Sangha that can be distributed to the manifest Sangha, how should he bless them? The nearby bhikkhu, having received the robes, thinks: I dwell alone in this place, and this robe received by the Sangha can be distributed to the manifest Sangha, this robe is my share, I should repair it well, hide it, I will bless it. I should repair this robe well, I will bless it, he should generate this thought and also express it in words. If he does not do so, then that bhikkhu should not appropriate that robe, and if he does, he will incur a Dukkhata offense. Similarly, the author of the Sutra also said that even if one person obtains very many things, it will not become a cause of unfreedom. The commentator also said: For example, a caravan leader sends a great deal of property to a monastery for the sake of the Sangha, and there is only one bhikkhu dwelling in that monastery, (he) thinks that he should not (accept it), therefore he does not accept it, and the Blessed One said that whoever dwells there can accept it, this is permitted. The Vinaya holder said, regarding the Sangha's etc., lawful means without fault, saying lawful refers to unlawful gold and...

For example, money, or non-compliant clothing such as musk, wool, yak hair, deer hair, etc., or abandoned items, or stored food, or unreceived items, or internal decay, etc., or outside the boundary, or not to be given as alms, eliminating these is called "as it is said." "What reason is there" means "what is the connection?" Adding "calling and speaking," where "calling" means "examining before and after." For the time being, if a monk is allowed to enjoy the gains of clothing or food or compliant items without incurring any offense, but the Blessed One says that there is only offense, what is the reason for saying this? The answer to this is: because it depends on the gains of the Sangha and is enjoyed by oneself, that is why it is said that way. Similarly, here the scripture is: Venerable, is there a case where a monk compliantly enjoys the gains of the Sangha without incurring any offense? There is a attendant nearby who says: Even if it is dedicated to the Sangha, it is still the same. There is also another scripture on this: Venerable, if a monk takes from his parents, will it become an abandonment offense? There is a attendant nearby who says: For example, if the parents dedicate that clothing to the Sangha, and the monk, knowing this, still transfers it to personal ownership, if the clothing already exists beforehand, it will become an abandonment offense. The gains offered to the stupa, etc., mean that the gains offered to the stupa, if the monk takes from that stupa, how can there be no offense? As it is said, adding "speak with diligence in discipline," offering to it is giving. To whom? It is said to the stupa. Because it is the image of the qualities of mindfulness, right abandonment, miraculous feet, roots, powers, Bodhi limbs, the path, etc., and completely transcends worldly qualities, therefore it is a stupa, that is, to it. Gains are items such as clothing and ornaments. From that, it means from the stupa, that is, as it is said. The Victorious One is Mara.
