If the king of the gods asks what the noble one has done, one should say to him, 'If I do not cause even the slightest harm to him, then I do four great things; otherwise, I do not.' If he says, 'Do not do it,' if one has taken a vow, one should distinguish the four great things that have been accomplished as the vow. However, if one does not speak, one should not speak even if one's life is at stake. Even for the sake of laughter, one should not knowingly speak falsely. To the words asked by teachers, abbots, and those who behave like Brahma, one should not divert to other things, but without being deceitful, one should only speak what is asked. If one sees someone who is to be killed running away, and the killer asks, 'Have you seen someone like this running away?' one should divert to other things. Having done so, if the noble one says, 'Tell me what should be said,' one should say, 'For a moment I saw a fingernail, for a moment I saw the sky.' Even having done so, the noble one still says, 'Tell me what should be said!' If one asks about other things, what is the use of prophesying about other things? One should look in the four directions and say, 'In truth, I have not seen any sentient beings.' In order to completely protect against nearby harm, one should divert to other things. If teachers and abbots say a few words, one should speak words that are in accordance with the Dharma, because the words of the Tathagata, the Arhat, the teacher, the abbot, the Sangha, the elders of the Sangha, the king, and their retinue should not be abandoned. Teachers and abbots who have attained transformation should be abandoned. One should not speak harsh words. One should not speak of people's faults. One should not say that so-and-so's lineage is this lineage, and similarly, the lineages of potters, blacksmiths, and so on. One should not slander. A sick person should not lie. One should not make others believe in lies, nor should one create joy. Like this and so on, there are many ways of lying, therefore, even if one's life is at stake, one should not knowingly speak falsely. Lying

One should protect (the precepts) in every way and by all means, because lying will be abandoned by those who practice like Brahma, and because one will fall into hell. These four objects of training are inherently faulty, so even if life is at stake, a sick person should not violate them. In the Sutra of the Objects of Training for a Novice Monk, the fourth object of training is abandoning lying. Abandoning intoxicating drinks such as grain alcohol and prepared alcohol means that one should not drink grain alcohol and prepared alcohol, not even a drop on a blade of grass. Grain alcohol is a drink made from food. Prepared alcohol is a drink made from flowers and tubers. Intoxicating is a drink made from fruit. Any intoxicating fruit should not be eaten, such as the Kotaba fruit. One should not drink an intoxicating drink if one thinks it is intoxicating, or if one is in doubt, or if one thinks it is not intoxicating. One should not eat the dregs. There is no fault in boiled alcohol, if it is free from intoxicating taste and smell, and there is no fault even if it has an intoxicating color. One should not give the juice of grain alcohol and prepared alcohol to others, nor should one encourage others to give it. One should not give the price of grain alcohol and prepared alcohol, nor should one encourage others to give it. A sick person should not drink intoxicating drinks such as grain alcohol and prepared alcohol, because this is also a transgression. One should drink something like boiled juice or a hot drink. There are three kinds of bottles: a bottle for feces, a bottle for urine, and a bottle for alcohol. Just as the two bottles mentioned above should be completely discarded, so should the bottle for alcohol. The Blessed One also said: Monks, those who say that I am their teacher should not give or drink intoxicating drinks, not even a drop on a blade of grass. One should not allow others to properly take intoxicating drinks such as grain alcohol and prepared alcohol. Various kinds of intoxicating drinks such as these.

Therefore, one must always and in every way guard against grain alcohol and concocted alcohol. Because drinking grain alcohol and concocted alcohol will cause those who practice celibacy to completely abandon it, and will also lead to falling into hell. In the Sutra of the Basis of Training for a Novice Monk, the fifth precept is called 'Abandoning the Drinking of Grain Alcohol and Concocted Alcohol.' Abandoning the sounds of dance, song, and music means not engaging in dance, song, and music, nor causing others to do so. There is no fault in praising the Blessed One Buddha for the sake of offering, and chanting the Three Jewels with melody. If one does not clearly understand the nature of the melody, one should go to a secluded place and learn. One should not watch dancers or others dancing. One should not sit where there is dancing and singing. One should not go upwards, jump, run, or play. One should not experience the pleasure of playing in water. In the Sutra of the Basis of Training for a Novice Monk, the sixth precept is called 'Abandoning Dance, Song, and Music.' Abandoning garlands, perfumes, ornaments, and colors means not wearing garlands and loose flowers on one's body, not bathing with scented water, not adorning one's body with bracelets, armlets, necklaces, etc., for the sake of joy, not applying fragrant substances to oneself, nor properly applying fragrant substances to the body. One should not fumigate religious robes with incense. If the smell is not pleasant, one should fumigate the religious robes with incense in order to eliminate the bad smell. One should offer garlands, perfumes, ornaments, colors, and other fragrant substances to the Blessed One Buddha. If a lay devotee bathes with scented water, it should be washed off in order to increase their merit. If one obtains blue lotus flowers or other flowers, one should wear them in the presence of the teacher, preceptor, monks, and worldly people.
