It should be said, "Bring the token!" If it is brought and the token matches, it should be given. Or if someone says, "I gave so-and-so such a token, and he will give it to you," if that person says so, it should be given. Or if the messenger is not known, it should be given by oneself, or entrusted to a trustworthy person. One should not befriend thieves, nor should one show them the way. One should not go with them. One should not carry things needed by thieves. If hunters and others, seeking refuge, flee to the monastery with deer and other animals, they should be protected. If they die, it should be given to them. If a debt is taken and the time has passed, it should be divided, and the debt should be repaid with utensils and other things. If a sick person, about to die, says to the nurse, "Whatever of my clothes and other things is yours," it should be accepted. However, if it is said to be someone else's or the Sangha's, it should not be accepted. When boarding a boat, one should be aware of the alms bowl and other items, and when letting go, say, "I have let go, have you taken it?" If it falls, no compensation should be given. If it falls without saying anything, compensation should be given. If clothes and other items are found fallen in the monastery, if someone comes and says, "Venerable, I have lost such and such a thing, if you have picked it up, please give it to me," although it has been picked up, one should ask, "What is the token?" If the token can be stated, it should be given in the presence of the assembly. If there is not even a little clue, it should not be enjoyed by oneself, but should be offered to the Sangha. By speaking with fabricated accusations against others, one should not take away the property of others. One should not let others think that taking what is not given is correct. Nor should one be pleased. A sick person should not accept offerings with a thieving mind. Nor should one take it through other means. Even if it is only one thing, there are many ways of taking what is not given, therefore, even if one's life is at stake, one should not take what is not given. Just as one protects one's own sleep.

Furthermore, because taking what is not given will be abandoned by those who practice equally with Brahma, and will also lead to falling into hell. Therefore, taking what is not given should be guarded in every way and from every aspect, and one should always be mindful. In the Sutra of the Basis of Training for a Novice Monk, the precept of abstaining from taking what is not given is the second precept. The precept of abstaining from impure conduct means not to possess the touch by inserting one's own sexual organ into the female's excretory passage, the anus, and the mouth. Similarly, it applies to males, hermaphrodites, humans, and those belonging to the animal realm. If one engages in impure conduct due to sensation, a state of impaired nature, or unwillingness, one should not possess it. One should not sleep touching bodies with householders, monks, or other novices, but should keep separate. If a place is not found, one should wrap the body separately with clothes and sleep in the same bed. One should not sleep with non-Buddhists and householders at the third twilight, nor in the light. One should not intentionally ejaculate semen. There is no fault in dreams. In whatever place, to whomever, or by whatever means, one should not force ejaculation by first grasping the sexual organ. If one sees women and develops a mind of desire, one should meditate on ugliness. One should not arouse women sexually, nor should one show the reasons for sexual activity, nor should one talk about sexual matters. One should not sit with women in a secluded place until sunset, nor should one repeatedly look at women. If someone is engaging in impure conduct somewhere, one should not go there, nor should one stay there, nor should one watch. One should not touch women. If someone is calling for help, saying they are about to fall into the water, and if no one else is present, one should rescue them with the perception of mother, daughter, and sister. One should speak Dharma to women with a mind free from attachment. One should not teach Dharma to women alone.
