Do not give food or drink. Ask a skilled doctor and give this person the food, drink, and medicine they desire. Do not have a foolish or ignorant person examine this person's medical condition; rather, rely on a skilled person. Do not explain to the patient such teachings that would cause their mind to dwell elsewhere. Tell them that they will be freed from the fear of illness, and that they will have a long, stable, and happy life. You should also encourage them by saying that as long as they practice the Dharma, they will accumulate a great deal of merit. Do not praise death to the patient. Do not let them fixate on death. Do not attend to the sick with an unloving mind. Nor should it be for the sake of gaining profit. Attend to the sick with sacred respect. Do not beat them. Do not force them to do anything. Do not cause them to change. Do not frighten them. Endure anger by abiding in all entanglements. Do not let it be like drawing a line on a stone, but rather like drawing a line on water. Do not regret intentionally. Do not tickle for the sake of laughter. If a patient says, "If you kill my enemies or order others to kill them, then I will recover from my illness and live," do not say such words in any way. The patient should not say, "Will you kill me or order others to kill me?" which is blameworthy by nature. Nor should you order others to kill. The patient should not take life. If there is a fetus in the corpse of the dead, it should be cut open, and after examining for signs of life, it should be cremated. One should keep a mind of loving-kindness close to all sentient beings. Do not be indifferent to these sentient beings who are impaired, bound, defeated, or punished. Therefore, for the sake of the various forms of killing, one should protect life by all means, even if faced with death. If one transgresses what has been said, all of this will become a transgression. Just as one protects one's own life, so should one protect the lives of others. Because

Killing is something that those who practice like Brahma should completely abandon, and it will also lead to falling into hell. In all circumstances, one should maintain mindfulness through all means. From the Sutra of the Basis of Training for a Novice Monk, the first precept is called "Abandoning Killing." What is called "Abandoning Taking What is Not Given" is: not taking the property of the Sangha or an individual with a stealing mind, nor taking it through others, nor moving property from one place to another with a stealing mind. If property is needed and there is consent, it should be taken with consent. Although not with a stealing mind, it should be taken with the intention of "giving something similar or of equal value," and the same items should be counted and the value given accordingly. Many monasteries are acceptable, but one should not take everything that is found, but only what belongs to that particular place. One should not take another's sesame husk with a stealing mind. One should not seize what has been sealed. If a certain householder seals something and says, "If I die, this is yours," then there is no fault for the one who enjoys it. If he says, "Give it to my mother, father, son, relatives, and friends," then it should be given. If he says, "Offer it to the Sangha," then it should be offered. If he dies without saying anything, there is no fault. If the mother, father, son, and relatives, etc., come to ask for it, saying, "So-and-so left this for you, and I am his relative, please give it to me," if it is determined that he is a relative, it should be given in the presence of the person. Because householders die with attachments, while renunciants are without attachments. If no one comes to ask for it, then merit should be made for the deceased. If a Bhikshu or a novice monk dies leaving behind property, it should be offered to the Sangha. If someone has deposited a small amount of goods and later sends someone else to take them, then it should be given to this person. But it should not be given immediately, but rather...
