I, who am called this, with actions in accordance with the Dharma, bless that I will go after the seven-day limit and return from then on. I will go from this summer retreat, and this is my summer retreat place. Likewise, two or three times. It is a means. It is good. Having blessed and gone, one should return after seven days, and likewise, one should not interrupt the summer retreat twice. If there is an obstacle to life, an obstacle to pure conduct, or an interruption of alms, there is no fault in breaking the summer retreat. One should promise the next summer retreat as it is, and properly declare the blessed promise. Then, on the day of the end of the retreat, one should perform the end of the retreat. Thus, the end of the retreat should be performed: in front of the abbot or teacher or anyone else, one should sit in a squatting position, holding the kusha grass in one's hand, with palms joined, and say these words: Abbot, please listen. Today is the fifteenth end of the retreat of the Sangha, and I, the monk called this name, am also the fifteenth end of the retreat, I, the monk called this name, in order to completely fulfill the aggregate of discipline, the assembled Sangha, from this day onwards, bless the end of the retreat in front of the abbot. Whenever an assembly of the Sangha is found, at that time, together with the assembly of the Sangha, I will perform the end of the retreat. Likewise, two or three times. It is a means. It is good. Whatever slight sinful actions have been done, one should sit squatting in front of the abbot or teacher or any other monk, with palms joined, and confess individually. Abbot, please listen. I, the monk called this name, whatever immeasurable transgressions have arisen from body and speech during this time, I, the monk called this name, hereby truly confess and thoroughly reveal those immeasurable transgressions. I confess. I deeply regret. I do not conceal. If I confess and repent, I, the monk called this name, if I abandon the immeasurable transgressions, I will abide in contact with happiness. If I do not confess and repent, it will not be so.

Have you fallen into transgression? I have fallen into transgression. Will you guard against it in the future? I will guard against it. Will you guard against it very well? I will not do that again in the future. Likewise, two or three times. It is a method. Good. Having confessed, I will not do it again, and if I confess in that way, I will abide relying on happiness. Having confessed, I will also perform the Uposatha. This is how to do it: having prostrated to the Khenpo or Acharya or any other Bhikshu, sit squatting in front of them. Having joined the palms, one should say these words: Khenpo, please listen. The Sangha's Uposatha is on the fourteenth or fifteenth day. I, a novice named so-and-so, in order to perfect the aggregate of precepts, bless and confess transgressions, and may all obstructing dharmas be completely purified. Likewise, two or three times. It is a method. Good. One should be respectful in learning everything. Having become completely pure, one can also obtain gain and honor from completely guarding the precepts, as well as obtaining higher realms such as the heavens, and through excellent Brahmacharya, one's own qualities and fame will spread. The Blessed One also said: Fame and the obtaining of gain and honor, as well as the heavens in the next life, those who seek these three kinds of happiness, should wisely rely on the precepts. Thus he spoke. Again, he said: By seeing these places, the wise rely on the precepts, obtain the vision of the noble ones, and obtain peace in the world. Thus he spoke. The scent of flowers does not travel against the wind, nor does grass or Indian sandalwood. The scent of the wise does not travel against the wind, but the great person travels in all directions. Indian incense and sandalwood, as well as summer lotuses, from those kinds of scents, the scent of precepts is unsurpassed. Because the precepts are not completely pure, there is great suffering in hell. For example, gouging out eyes, splitting like wood, cooking like fruit, squeezing like sugarcane, grinding into flour with a mortar, hands and feet and tongues being cut off, drinking boiling copper, eating burning iron balls, crossing a river of ashes, and iron...

Climbing the trees of the charnel ground, entering into iron vessels, being eaten by dogs with sharp teeth, climbing the forest of sword leaves, and so forth. Suffering in various ways in the hells, such as burning, harming, and beating. These should be viewed in the Sutra of the Divine Messenger and the Sutra of Mastery of Power. The pretas also have the suffering of hunger, thirst, and harm, and the suffering of the fear of animals devouring each other, and so forth. For those whose discipline is not completely pure, there are such faults and others as well. Just as monks who possess four qualities become non-monks, so too, a novice will become a non-novice. Therefore, even if life is at stake, one should protect the discipline with complete purity. The Sutra of the Basis of Training for Novices is complete with the proper acceptance of the signs of ordination. The basis of training for novices, having been properly compiled. By whatever merit has been accumulated from this, may beings have the fortune of goodness! Composed by the Sutra-holding teacher Kalyanamitra, the Sutra of the Basis of Training for Novices is complete. Translated, revised, and finalized by the Kashmiri abbot, the pandita Mahajana of the city of Incomparable, and the Shakya monk Yönnu Chok. Later, it was corrected and revised by the Kashmiri pandita Paraheta and the translator Shakya monk Yönnu Chok. The Sutra of the Basis of Training for Novices, Kalyanamitra.
