In order to expel the earth, one should hold something that makes a cracking sound. To an elder, one should speak with the words "Venerable" or "Monk." To a middle one, with the word "Venerable." To a young one, with the word "Long-lived." The words "Long-lived" should not always be used to address teachers, preceptors, and venerable ones. Others should not be addressed by the names of teachers and preceptors. Among all the summer retreats, one should vow to enter the summer retreat early or late. The early one is from the first day of the last summer month until the fifteenth day of the middle autumn month, and one should not interrupt the summer retreat until the dissolution. The late one is from the first day of the second autumn month until the fifteenth day of the waxing moon of the last autumn month, and one should not interrupt the summer retreat until then. One should also vow to enter the summer retreat in this way: sitting squatting before the preceptor, teacher, or other monks, with palms joined, and saying these words: "Preceptor, please listen. Now is the time for the Sangha to observe the middle summer month, and I, the novice monk named so-and-so, am also observing the middle summer month, the time for the summer retreat. I, the novice monk named so-and-so, in this place within the boundary, in order to repair the broken and damaged dwelling, by the benefactor so-and-so, the attendant so-and-so, the one who cares for the sick so-and-so, and the city of residence so-and-so, vow to observe the three summer months. I am entering the summer retreat from here, and this is my summer retreat place." Repeat this two or three times. This is the method. Very good! After vowing to enter the summer retreat, if one goes anywhere else, one should bless seven days for the sake of the Dharma. Bowing down before the preceptor, teacher, or any other monk, then squatting and saying these words: "Preceptor, please listen. I, the novice monk named so-and-so, in this place within the boundary, having vowed to stay for the first three months of summer, my novice monk"
