It should be examined and then used; it should not be discarded. How should it be done? Therefore, it is said, 'If there are living beings, filter them well; do not harm the living beings.' Having said this, regarding the living beings that suddenly appear in the filtrate and the juice of food, if one knows to filter them well without disturbing them, that is filtering. If one knows to remove them by hand, then remove them well and send them to their respective places, without disturbing them or letting them die. For the living beings that live in cold water, if they are sent to warm water, they will be harmed, so they should be sent to cold water. For the living beings that live in warm water, if they are sent to cold water, they will be harmed, so they should be sent to warm water. If this is not done, and one drinks water with living beings, or sends the living beings to a place that is not their own, causing them to die, then for as many living beings that die, one will receive that many faults. Examining the filtered water, if it is examined in the morning like today, then it can be used until the morning of the next day. There are five kinds of water that can be used even if I have not filtered or examined them. What are the five? Water that has been examined within a fathom's (Tibetan unit of length, approximately an arm's length) circumference, water from wells and the like, water from virtuous monks, water from the Sangha, and water that can be trusted. Among them, water that has been examined within a fathom's circumference refers to going to the center of a pond or lake, etc., up to the navel, and examining whether there are living beings. If there are none, then it is water that has been examined within a fathom's circumference and can be used. Water from wells and the like refers to taking water from wells, ponds, reservoirs, etc., with a fishing net and examining whether there are living beings. If there are none, then it can be used for one day and night. Water from virtuous monks refers to water that has been filtered by monks who abide by the precepts and fear sin. Even if I have not examined or filtered it, it can be used. Water from the Sangha refers to water that has been examined, filtered, and set aside, like water for the common use of the Sangha. Even if I have not examined or filtered it, it can be used. Water that can be trusted refers to water that flows from cliffs or steep mountainsides, or springs that gush upwards from underground, etc., because it is unlikely that there are living beings, it is called water that can be trusted.

Therefore, it can be used. The precept for filtering water is established because monks who are fond of water containing living beings perform actions such as rinsing and creating mandalas. After that, a monk should not reside in a place without any of the five water filters. If he resides without them, he commits a wrong deed. If water is examined and filtered in this way to remove living beings before use, then how should one use grass and trees, etc., if they contain living beings? Therefore, it is said, "Roots, heavy objects, trees, etc., whatever is needed, make them free of living beings." This means that roots, etc., used as mats under beds, heavy objects used for washing mandalas and houses, unburned wood, and the word "etc." also includes earth, etc. Whatever substance a monk is to use, he should examine whether it contains living beings. If it does, he should filter it and safely transport the living beings to their respective places. After making it free of living beings, he should use it. To briefly explain the meaning of what was said in the section on water, it is said, "Protect against killing living beings with discipline." This means that monks are compassionate and possess discipline, so they must protect against the killing of all living beings, large and small, and not kill any living being. Mats, water, earth, toothpicks, and clay mortar should also be prepared. Washing bowls, etc., and all the needs of the guru should be done. These words indicate that one should accomplish the work of the Khenpo and Acharya. After examining and filtering in this way, add, "All the needs of the guru should be done." Guru refers to Khenpo and Acharya, and their needs are to practice and accomplish the work of Khenpo and Acharya. So, what are those to be practiced? To explain this, it is said, "Mats, water, earth, toothpicks, and clay mortar should also be prepared." This means that the work of the Khenpo and Acharya is to lay out mats in the morning where the Khenpo and Acharya wash their faces, and to prepare water for washing, toothpicks, and clay mortar, etc. For the places where they go to defecate and urinate, prepare earth and leaves, etc.
