A Commentary on the Fifty Verses on the Practice of a Mendicant. By Kamalaśīla. A Commentary on the Fifty Verses on the Practice of a Mendicant. By Kamalaśīla. Homage to the All-Knowing One! A Commentary on the Fifty Verses on the Practice of a Mendicant. For example, just as planting seeds on the ground, sprouts arise dependent on the seeds, leaves arise dependent on the sprouts, branches arise dependent on the leaves, flowers arise dependent on the branches, and fruits arise dependent on the flowers; similarly, dependent on discipline, which is like the ground, aggregates of samādhi, like sprouts and so forth, arise. Having arisen from the aggregates of samādhi, then aggregates of wisdom, like flowers, arise. Having arisen from the aggregates of wisdom, then aggregates of liberation and aggregates of the wisdom of seeing liberation, like fruit, arise. Therefore, since discipline is the basis for the arising of all virtue, one should strive to maintain discipline. If these fifty precepts for mendicants are summarized from beginning to end, they can be explained in eight ways. What are the eight? They are: showing praise and prostration, taking up the training, what to do in the morning, what to do after eating, places of defeat, minor precepts, how to act after noon, and eighth, showing how to achieve the fruit. Starting with "Protector," a brief explanation will be given as necessary. Up to "should be explained," it shows praise and prostration to one's own deity. Starting with "Śākya Simha," up to "Protect the training like your own body," it shows taking up the training. Starting with "The latter part of the night," up to "Recite two verses of giving," it shows what to do in the morning. Starting with "If there is a secret instruction, meditate," up to "One should strive in practice," it shows the practice of virtue. Starting with "Behavior, dwelling, mind," up to "Words should be carefully guarded," it shows the place of defeat. Starting with "Grain mixed with chaff,"

From the phrases "Respectfully, thus one should restrain oneself," the minor precepts are taught. Starting from "Having washed the hands purely," up to "Act as it has been taught," the activities from afternoon onwards are taught. From "How can afflictions be quickly exhausted, and supreme enlightenment be attained?" to "Therefore, one should be diligent and endowed with effort," the result is taught. For the disciples of the Buddha, their deities are the Three Jewels: the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. "Protector, All-Knowing" indicates praise and prostration to the Buddha. Praise to the Buddha is given through his actions for the benefit of others and the attainment of perfect self-benefit. Among these, "Protector" signifies his perfect benefit to others, that is, saving sentient beings born in the three lower realms from that suffering, and saving gods and humans born in the realms who are tormented by birth, aging, sickness, and death. Therefore, the Buddha is called Protector, as he is the refuge and support for all sentient beings. For sentient beings born in the three lower realms, he liberates them from the lower realms by emitting rays of light and showing emanated bodies. For gods and humans born who are tormented by birth, aging, sickness, and death, he teaches the Four Noble Truths and establishes them in these truths, thereby saving them from birth, aging, sickness, and death. "All-Knowing" indicates the attainment of perfect self-benefit, that is, he knows completely all the phenomena that should be known, such as the aggregates, elements, sense bases, and dependent origination, and he knows these phenomena without error as being impermanent, suffering, empty, and selfless. Therefore, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, is called All-Knowing. These are offered as prostrations to the Buddha who has perfected the benefit of self and others. "Dharma" indicates praise and prostration to the Dharma. There are three aspects of the Dharma: the Dharma of teaching, the Dharma of realization, and the Dharma of fruition. Among these, the twelve branches of scripture are the Dharma of teaching. One's own thirty-seven factors of enlightenment are
