As shown in the phrase, "If there are stains, cleanse them well." The phrase, "One does not dwell without a dwelling," refers to the fact that one is not entitled to reside without a designated dwelling for ten years or less than five years after receiving full ordination. Therefore, monks are not allowed to reside even for one night without a dwelling, as this is the Buddha's teaching. The phrase, "Monastic bedding and so on, one should not sit without mindfulness," refers to the fact that monastic bedding, cushions, beds, and stools, which are shared by the Sangha, are not to be used casually. One should sit after remembering the teachings of impermanence and so on. One should not sit without such mindfulness. One is allowed to sit with a mind that remembers these teachings. Therefore, if one is mindful, there is no fault. The phrase, "Rinsing the mouth and drinking water, going to urinate and defecate, prostrating within the boundary, there is no fault in not reporting these," means that there will be no fault even if these things are not reported to the Khenpo and Acharya. The phrase, "Other things of the ascetic, all of them without exception, if done without reporting to the Lama, then that is committing a fault," means that monks should report all matters such as practicing, reciting, and sewing clothes to the Khenpo. If one does some things without reporting, one will commit a fault. The phrase, "After prostrating to stupas and so on, not sleeping beneath them, washing the Guru's feet," means that after a monk prostrates to stupas and statues at night, he should report to the person to whom he can ask, "Until dawn tomorrow, I will not sleep and will do as much good as I can." After reporting in this way, wash the feet of both the Khenpo and Acharya, as well as the Lamas, with clean water. The phrase, "To the Guru, the ascetic reports everything," means that after washing the Guru's feet in this way, the ascetic monk, after reporting what good deeds should be done, and so on, is the conclusion of these words. What should be done? The phrase, "After washing both feet, in the upper and lower parts of the night, diligently not sleeping," means that after returning to one's dwelling, one should wash both feet clean and, as reported, in the upper and lower parts of the night.

In the latter part of the night, at dawn, one should engage in virtuous practice without sleeping, with great diligence. If done in this way, the virtuous practitioner, as requested, will speak truthfully, because it is done as requested. With the awareness of rising and clarity, one should sleep like a lion. This means that even when sleep comes and the body is laid down on the bed, one should not sleep without mindfulness. One should keep in mind the thought of rising quickly and the awareness of quickly awakening and clarity, and sleep on the right side like a lion. The continuum of mindfulness and thought, and likewise, after quickly awakening, one should act as instructed. This means that sleeping with the awareness of clarity and rising is called having mindfulness and thought. Therefore, one will quickly awaken and rise. After awakening in this way, one should rise from the bed in the latter part of the night and recite until dawn. The meaning of this is to practice and meditate as instructed. The activities after noon have been explained. Now, with three verses, in order to explain guarding the precepts of the virtuous practitioner, and eating food and drinking clean water in the morning and afternoon, and showing respect to the Khenpos, Acharyas, and Lamas through body, speech, and mind, etc., if one practices and acts as instructed, one will obtain merit and three kinds of fruits. To explain this, how one will quickly cease afflictions and obtain the supreme Bodhi, one should be diligent in this way. Thus it is said. Being diligent in this way means that if one strives as mentioned above, one will quickly cease afflictions in this life, and in the future, one will obtain the supreme and unsurpassed Bodhi from the three kinds of Bodhi. The concise explanation of the Fifty Verses on Virtuous Conduct is completed. Composed by the teacher Kamalashila. Completed. A word-for-word memorandum of the Fifty Verses on Virtuous Conduct.
