If one drinks alcohol, one will be punished. Although honey and sugar and the like have the power to intoxicate, since color, smell, and taste, etc., and the world, etc., are not disparaged, intoxication by those things is not a fault. If a renunciate is afflicted by illness and needs to perform a ritual with alcohol, then the body should be anointed with alcohol. If it is to help with loss of appetite, it should only be poured into the mouth, not drunk. Even if one cannot survive without drinking alcohol, it should be boiled to remove the taste of alcohol and the power to intoxicate, making it only similar in taste and color to alcohol. The origin of song, dance, and music is that the Blessed One was staying in Rajagriha (Rajgir, Bihar). When King Bimbisara built a temple for the sake of the Naga King Mountain and Delightful, and held a great festival, performers came from the south and imitated the actions of the Six Groups. The Six Groups were angry and, in order to harm the performers who were holding the festival at another time, the Six Groups danced. All the people did not look at the performers, but looked at the Six Groups dancing, and the musicians did not receive any reward. Their livelihood was cut off, and the musicians complained. The place was Rajagriha (Rajgir, Bihar), the people were the Six Groups, the affliction was hatred, and the fault was making the sound of song, dance, and music. Song, dance, as well as cymbals, etc., should not be done by those who abide in discipline. This is to show the abandonment of the fault of arrogance. Among them, song is Shar and Gandhara, etc. Dance is moving the hands and feet and turning the body. If one abides in discipline and does these two, one will commit a wrong action. Do not have others do it; if you have others do it, it is also a wrong action. Cymbals are implements for offerings and parts of musical instruments. There are various ways of clanging and playing them, and those who abide in discipline should not do these. Why? Because those are the causes of becoming scattered and arrogant, or of causing the limbs to sway. Even if one has others sing and dance for the sake of making offerings, one should not have them sing and dance. Like the lords of gods and asuras making offerings, say, "Make offerings to the dust of the Buddha's feet," and then have them do it. Or, it is permissible to do so in order to generate faith in other sentient beings, for the sake of (proclaiming) the great qualities of the Three Jewels.
