Also, this is a precept, meaning that one commits a defeat. This shows that one should not accept it in any way. 'When a limb arises and desires pleasure, it is better to put it in the mouth of a poisonous snake. The asceticism of the body should not be destroyed,' thus spoke the Perfectly Awakened One. That is to say, if, under the control of desire, my limb arises and becomes very strong, in order to be free from that desire and to desire happiness, it is better to put it in the mouth of a poisonous snake. It is beneficial for me to be free from desire, so I would rather do that. The Perfectly Awakened Bhagavan taught that my precepts on the body are indestructible. How so? 'Even if killed by a snake, it is beneficial to the one who abides in morality.' Thus it is said. If, under the control of desire, a limb arises and is put into the mouth of a poisonous snake and dies, not entering the place of appearance of the three doors, it is beneficial to that moral person, because he is born in a higher realm. If that morality is destroyed, it is suffering, because he will be born in the three lower realms. Moreover, it will also obstruct nirvana. If morality is destroyed, there is no share of liberation and nirvana. That is its meaning. The third defeat has been explained. The basis of the fourth defeat, lying, is: The Bhagavan was dwelling near the Monkey Pond in Vaishali. At that time, there was a great famine, and food was very scarce, to the point that parents would not even give food to their children. Monks with miraculous powers and elders went to other prosperous and flourishing lands, such as the unpleasant sound of the north, and they themselves ate and gave food to others. Then, five hundred monks and others who had ordained from fishermen also wanted to do as those monks did and enter the summer retreat, but they had not attained miraculous powers, and their learning was little, and they could not do so. They thought, 'We will enter the summer retreat in this very place, and proclaim our respective qualities in order to obtain gain.' So they entered the retreat. Then, those five hundred began to praise each other's qualities. 'This one has attained the fruit of stream-entry.'

Or saying that one has attained the first dhyana, or that one has attained the second dhyana, or that one has attained the third and fourth dhyanas, if one says so, it is also a defeat. Similarly, if one says that one has attained any of the five superknowledges, it is also a defeat. Furthermore, concealing one's thoughts, saying that one has accomplished any of the four immeasurables, or concealing the thoughts of a practitioner, saying that one has attained the fruit of stream-enterer among the four fruits, or the once-returner, or the non-returner, or the fruit of arhat. If others understand the meaning, and understand it, this is a false statement, and one will commit a defeat. One who has entered the path, the practitioner conceals his thoughts, saying that he has attained the path beyond the world, it is also a defeat. Relying on some of the signs of the cessation of the worldly path, saying that one does not engage in desire and hatred, one commits a sanghavasesa. Having the nature of attaining excellent qualities, called "not degenerated." The practitioner says that he is not mentally deranged, not tormented by illness, abiding in his own nature, has attained the excellent qualities mentioned above and has seen them with his own eyes, then he will commit a defeat because of this. Those who are mentally deranged and tormented by illness will not commit a defeat, but will be established as a sanghavasesa, that is its meaning. Even without arrogance, speaking will cause the code of conduct to degenerate. It means that formerly there was a practitioner who lived in a secluded place, subdued the afflictions with the worldly path, and prevented them from arising, and a long time passed. Observing the places where afflictions do not arise, because afflictions do not arise, so he thought and said that we have cut off the afflictions. Later, when he arrived in the village, because the worldly path had not completely cut off the afflictions, when the places where afflictions arise, such as women and enemies, appeared, the afflictions arose again. Those monks said that we have not cut off the afflictions, but said that we have cut them off, boasting in this way, may I ask the Blessed One, is this committing the defeat of increased pride in human dharma? The Blessed One said, except for those who have increased pride, even if one attains such excellent qualities in the future, one should not speak. Like this, it will not be established as a defeat. The practitioner conceals his thoughts, gods and nagas
