This is a very famous principle in the sacred teachings. Some ordinary people, in order to learn the Pratimoksha vows, will also learn by using words such as "I will learn." Therefore, if one speaks after thinking, the fault will become smaller, this is a concluding word. Or, having entered the path, knowing that I am abiding in the path. Through actions and so on, it also shows the same meaning, having entered the path, with the thought of understanding abiding in the noble path, saying "I am abiding in the path," even so, the fault will become smaller, that is the meaning. The word "path" shows other ways. And so on, those are also like that, meaning that those are like that, established by similar words such as like that and so on, just like how it became smaller before, here also has this meaning. The word "etc." indicates that other similarities, such as entering the stream, etc., should also be known, for example, after abiding in the stream, saying things like "I have entered the stream." The word "stream" is also applicable to the noble path and the stream of a river, therefore the meaning is the same. Similarly, thinking about being liberated from the bonds of universal conduct, saying "I have been liberated from bonds, etc." Because the word "bond" expresses desire, etc., therefore the bonds of desire and the bonds of hatred, etc., have the same meaning as universal conduct, etc., and cessation. Some people think from the absence of anything in containers, etc., in order to understand slight abandonment, saying "I have nothing." Here, the word "nothing" indicates matter and afflictions, because the meaning is the same when these two do not exist. For ordinary people and Arhats, one can also say "nothing," similar words should be said, and one should observe such situations. Because what is expressed by words such as learning, through the form just mentioned, thinking that oneself possesses the undefiled Dharma that others do not have, and is a learner, etc., able to understand separately, that is due to one's own thoughts, and others...

Therefore, it should be recognized that faults arising from true realization, if not real, become very small. All thoughts and things that others trust should be fully expressed. Alas, how can I become like you? However, it will have the fruit of non-retrogression. Now, if one says, "I am not a noble one," if spoken in a roundabout way, the fault will be small. This is because the roundabout way of speaking is mentioned, and the roundabout way of speaking only says a part. Therefore, from roundabout narration and speech, the fault will become smaller, but in reality, it will not change. This "is" must be grasped firmly. To give an example, it is shown by "Alas, how can I become like you?" etc. Alas, how am I, that is, how am I, may you also become like me. Alas is a mantra praising wishes. After saying these words, "However, it will have the fruit of non-retrogression," etc., if one says, "It will become like me," this should be direct. The word "ni" means "because of what." Because of what does it become like that? If one asks what it will become, the answer is: it will have the fruit of non-retrogression. Now, if one says this, others will believe it. However, because it is non-retrogressive, in order to universally show that oneself is also equal to me, therefore, others will separately know that I have the fruit of non-retrogression, etc. Speaking in this other way, the fault will become smaller. If later one says, "Now I am not a noble one," saying this will also only be a roundabout way of speaking. Similarly, for "Samadhi absorption I do not have now," etc., one can also say, "I am not in samadhi today." If one speaks in this roundabout way, the fault will become smaller. This "however" is to closely show the manner of roundabout speaking. Just as showing in a roundabout way that one is not in samadhi, for "It was not yesterday," etc.

English

The term "yesterday" refers to the immediately past day and night, primarily because it signifies dominion. Therefore, "entering meditative absorption yesterday" means entering meditative absorption in the past day and night. Similarly, in the phrase "not after yesterday," "yesterday" refers to the immediately past sun, relative to "yesterday," meaning not entering meditative absorption after yesterday. Speaking in such a roundabout way to one's son or others implies that the transgression will be lessened. Because if I were to say, "I did not enter meditative absorption today," others might think, "This person must have attained meditative absorption, but due to other pressing matters, they did not enter absorption." One should express their thoughts as before. The correct subsequent statement is indicated by phrases such as, "What is this house devoid of desire?" The house of renunciation, wherever it may be, is devoid of desire. Having established this, one later says, "That is mine." One ascertains that it is definitely not another's. "That" refers to guiding the house that was just indicated, because previously only "this" was explicitly stated, hence "that" is used in a concealed manner. Having spoken in such a roundabout way, one then says, "I am not free from desire," meaning that which is free from characteristics such as desire and is without defilement, that is, devoid of desire. That is: I am, I am not free from desire. "And" means to ascertain that it is not only me. Even if it has been determined that the subsequent indication is correct, it is still only an indirect indication. Thus, there is no indirect statement arising from the subsequent correct statement. Not speaking is indicated by phrases such as, "Venerable one, if you are an Arhat, please accept my alms." If you have become an Arhat, then please accept my alms. Having said this, because there is no response, it is acknowledged as such, and if one accepts the alms. Similarly, this is the exhaustion of outflows because the outflows of afflictions have been exhausted, therefore it is the exhaustion of outflows, outflows.
