Even so, if it is registered, it will not be of full value, because of the multitude of renunciates, up to this point. The other meaning is, since it is forbidden in this way, then the thief will be guilty, but not the Sangha. At that time, if the items are complete, then a root offense is committed, and if the items are not complete, then a minor offense is committed, so it is not just a matter of valuation, but also because it is not valued at some times, and for everything, one-fourth of a Nanakā will not be complete. Since this is the case, why is it said that a minor offense will be committed? The Blessed One spoke of valuation in the Vinaya, therefore it is spoken of in dependence on that. That is the gain belonging to the boundary, and in that, sometimes it is little, and sometimes it is much, so when it becomes little, the value will not be complete. Why is it said that it is because the disciplined ones increase? That is so, but the intention of the author of the treatise is that the Blessed One said that there are three kinds of things, namely food, utensils, and things to be placed. Among them, food refers to grains and so on, which are the meaning of food, because they are to be eaten. Utensils refer to robes and bowls and so on, because they are to be worn. Things to be placed refer to fields, houses, and shops and so on, because they are to be placed for the benefit of the Sangha of the four directions. Therefore, here too it should be known that it is because of the multitude of the Sangha joining the four directions. Here it is said, even so, how is it reasonable to have shares of fields and so on that are different in boundary and place? It is only reasonable to exist within the boundary, and there, because it becomes little at some times, the value is complete, therefore it should also be examined in detail. However, others can avoid other offenses against the Sangha, and there is also such a thing in the Vinaya, saying that a resident monk had the Sangha's field cultivated, and not far from there, there was a patron's field, and he also had it cultivated, and the patron

Moreover, (he) came and said, "Monk, why did you have my field plowed?" The field is not yours, but belongs to the Sangha. He then said, "This will show the four great non-human elements of the monk." Then, that householder dug out the wooden stake that had previously been set as the boundary of the field and showed it, and the monk abandoned plowing. After the householder left, (he) had the stake put back in place and had that field plowed. The householder came again and said, "Monk, if you are defeated by the master of the lawsuit, will you still plow?" He also felt regret because of this. The Blessed One taught, "If the objects are complete, it will constitute a major offense; however, if the objects are incomplete, it will constitute a minor offense." This is how it is said in the scriptures. Therefore, the offense should be established as follows: whoever steals, whoever feels regret, and whoever has the thought of stealing in their mind, the offense is established on that person. Because the situation at that time was not the situation of the Sangha, and there was no thought of stealing, etc., this is the answer. If one picks flowers, etc., how does it constitute stealing? The answer is, it is said, "Whoever picked" and so on. Whatever flowers, etc., are picked, it is stealing after picking. Whatever clothes, etc., are collected, it is stealing after concealing. Any flourishing tree is also the same, whatever is stolen. In this kind of stealing, it is only the moving of the heap and collection of picked flowers and fruits that is stealing, meaning that it is moved from the ground. Similarly, the collection of clothes, etc., and the flourishing trees are also the same. "Flourishing trees" refers to the approximate indication of trees such as flowers. Even if there is no act of prevention, "picking" should be regarded as a repeated meaning. Otherwise, words such as "picking" and "concealing" will become meaningless, because generally speaking, moving from the original place is regarded as stealing. "And" is a word that connects, and "only" is for definite grasping. "Flowers and other trees are stolen after being uprooted," the meaning of "from the extensive (scriptures)" is that this is the meaning derived from the extensive scriptures. "Extensive" refers to differentiation, therefore, first uprooting and then stealing.
