Thus, the nature of the exhaustion of night is day, and the nature of day is light, and light is the first dawn and so on. Therefore, it is said, "When the first dawn of the eleventh day appears." Otherwise, how would it become "At the time when the first dawn of the eleventh day rises"? In this way, it is also not contradictory to what is said in the treatise, "The state of light is day, and the state of darkness is night," because the rising of the first dawn and so on is for the sake of diligent light. From the treatises of astronomy and astrology, it is established that "the drum should be beaten at the moment when one-eighth of the night remains." Therefore, the so-called "night near the beating of the drum" is the night with half the moment remaining, and this is only in the sense of "the first dawn appearing." It should be understood that the first dawn appears at half the moment remaining and above. Here, in the scripture, in the Bhikshuni Vibhanga, it says, "In the first half of the last period, it is the night near the beating of the drum, it is the time when the first dawn appears." If day and night are established from the first dawn and so on, then how should the suitability of day and night mentioned in the Water Training Ground be understood? If it is said that the water observed now is suitable until the first dawn rises, and thereafter it is impossible to observe because it has exceeded the invisible path, and it is also impossible to use water, and the fault will become very large, then there is no fault, because in the Miscellaneous Matters it says, "The day should be observed, and it should be used as much as possible up to the limit of the time of the first dawn." The so-called "limit of the time of the first dawn" refers to the one-third of the first dawn that is generally taken. Like that, in the Vinaya Sutra it says, "One should follow the observation until the sun rises." The so-called "when" refers to the universal, so it should be understood as including day and dawn. Other schools say, "The remaining quarter of the moment and above is not the last period of the night, and the drum should be beaten at each period," and there is also an establishment for them.

Therefore, monks, when the last watch of the night arrives, close to the time of drumming to announce the dawn, when the time for the approaching dawn has come, because it has been said that the dawn will arrive soon. If someone asks, does the dawn only arrive when one-fifth of the night remains? Saying that is uncertain. If someone asks, is it certain that this is a statement of separate explanation? Even so, the explanation of the Blessed One's words should be called a separate explanation. However, from the perspective of what this is an explanation of, the statement that the first dawn is when one-fifth of the night remains will not appear. Or, even if it is so. If the characteristic of the dawn appearing manifests in the sky, then that is undoubtedly indisputable. As it is said in the treatise on stars: When the first dawn appears, the east will appear blue, the light of the stars will diminish, and the sky will turn bluish-gray. When the middle dawn appears, the east will appear grayish-red, the light of the stars will become smaller, and the sky will turn yellowish-gray. When the last dawn appears, the light of the stars will disappear, and the last dawn is called "Ozi." "Ozi" lasts until the sun rises. It is like this teaching. It is sufficient to come along the way. Then, why is it necessary to mention one's own continent? The place where one resides, such as Jambudvīpa (འཛམ་བུའི་གླིང་, Jambudvīpa, 阎浮提), is called one's own continent, and anything other than that is another situation, in order to fully explain this. Here, in the scripture, it is asked: Monk, do monks eat and prepare food at the wrong time? If they do, will there be a downfall? The answer is like this: If the people of Jambudvīpa (འཛམ་བུའི་གླིང་, Jambudvīpa, 阎浮提) eat according to the time of the three continents, there will be no downfall. This is also said with regard to those who reside in Jambudvīpa In the basis of the story, it is asked: Monk, if a monk begs for alms in Pūrvavideha (ཤར་གྱི་ལུས་འཕགས་གླིང་,Pūrvavideha,弗婆提毗提诃) in the east, according to what time should he beg? According to what time should they do it? And so on. These words are spoken to those who reside in Pūrvavideha (ཤར་གྱི་ལུས་འཕགས་གླིང་,Pūrvavideha,弗婆提毗提诃) and other places. For the time of residence, here it refers to those who wander at the right and wrong times, and the manner of going for alms and so on.
