One should completely abandon all things such as speaking of the earth. If causing friends to separate is in accordance with the doctrine, then how can making divisive speech to a novice monk result in an offense of wrongdoing? If it is asked in this way. The answer is: The wrongdoing that is spoken of separately in the Vinaya, that is mental wrongdoing, not other wrongdoing. Because wrongdoing refers to the action of the mind, there is no fault, this is the concluding statement. If so, from where does this come? Because the precepts of a novice monk are characterized by four abandonments. Similarly, by adding three: divisive speech, harsh speech, and idle speech, the precepts of a monk are characterized by seven abandonments. In the commentary on the words of a novice monk, the fourth basis of training is completed. Wine made with the juice of fruits, etc., is said to be modified wine, grape wine, sugarcane wine, etc. Mixed, pressed, and blended wine, even the virtuous should not drink. Among them, modified wine is like this: grape wine made from grape juice, and sugarcane wine made from sugarcane juice. Mentioning the similarity is to include coconut juice and flowers, etc. Mixed wine should be understood as being mixed with grains and pressed. Therefore, the Blessed One taught that these two kinds of intoxicating drinks should not be drunk even by the virtuous. Then, regarding mixed wine and modified wine, intoxicating juices, abandoning the place of carelessness, why is it necessary to mention mixed wine and modified wine? Here, two kinds of mixed wine and modified wine are indicated, in order to prevent misunderstanding as Gotrava, etc. Mentioning intoxication is not meaningless, but to avoid negligence. Carelessness is the cause of intoxication. The meaning of this saying is a summary, that is, mixed wine and modified wine. In order to prevent misunderstanding as Gotrava, etc. Just as it is said in the Abhidharmakosha, eating cheese and Gotrava, etc., can also cause intoxication, so modified wine and mixed wine are mentioned. If that is the case, can one use intoxicating cheese and Gotrava, etc.? One should not eat them, because those are unsuitable foods.

Because it accords with the aspect of increase, it is prohibited. Here, refraining from intoxication is solely for the purpose of prohibiting those factors that cause mental confusion. This does not prohibit all that is unsuitable. However, 'intoxication' means that which, when consumed, one cannot distinguish between what should be done and what should not be done. Curd and molasses are not like that, because they do not cause mental confusion. If that were the case, would it be permissible to drink an intoxicating substance in moderation, since it does not cause mental confusion? That is not so, because the measure of intoxication is not fully known, and it is easy to go to excess, and because it is of the same nature, it should be completely avoided. Therefore, it is prohibited in all circumstances. The Blessed One said, 'Monks, those who have received my teachings should not give or drink intoxicating liquor, even on the tip of a blade of grass.' If you ask, why mention intoxicating liquor? Because mentioning intoxication is not to avoid faults. Therefore, for the penalty of mixing and the penalty of adjusting, as long as it has not become an intoxicating substance, or even if it has become so, as long as it has turned sour, it should be drunk. This will be explained in other verses about drinking. If you ask, why abandon the place of heedlessness? The explanation is that mentioning heedlessness is the cause of abandoning it. Because the place of heedlessness, which is drinking intoxicating liquor, is abandoned, it is abandoned in order to show this reason. This is the conclusion. Chapter Seven. Now, the classification of downfall will be explained: Whoever knowingly drinks intoxicants, and becomes intoxicated after drinking, it is only a minor offense. From eating turmeric and calamus, similarly, a minor offense is destroyed by the vajra. Any novice monk who, with the knowledge that it is an intoxicating substance, drinks intoxicating liquor and becomes intoxicated, commits a minor offense. Similarly, eating turmeric and eating calamus, also the vajra of a minor offense

It will only lead to downfall. The residue of brewed alcohol is nurtsi, and the residue of mixed alcohol is pangma. Others say that the residue is nurtsi, and the extracted juice is pangma. Just like that: Because the juice of pangma is extracted, it leads to dry feces and wrong quarrels. That is what is said. Any intoxicating substance such as fermentation stones or roots, if eaten, becomes minor. Anything that has the taste and smell of intoxicating juice, even if it is not intoxicating juice, should not be drunk. Regarding this, fermentation refers to any seed mixed for the purpose of intoxicating juice. If you eat intoxicating substances such as fermentation stones or roots, it will turn into a minor transgression. Even if it is not an intoxicating substance, but if it has the taste of intoxicating juice and the smell of intoxication, it should not be drunk, because that will also lead to downfall. Applying to the body and gargling in the mouth, except when sick, should not be done with intoxicating juice. At other times besides being sick, applying to the body or gargling in the mouth should not be done with intoxicating juice. If applied to the body, it is a sin because it enters through the pores. Gargling in the mouth is because you don't want to swallow it, so you think there is no sin, in order to prevent this kind of thinking. If boiled or just the color is similar, or it is not the substance of intoxicating juice, drinking spoiled things is not a sin. Like this, what should be avoided here is the cause of intoxication. If we give examples of things similar to intoxicating substances, they are leeks, onions, and garlic. Garlic and the like are explained from the separate explanations as being similar to untimely food. Just like that, if you drink it, it is in accordance with downfall and Dharma, so it is explained here. Furthermore, even like drinking alcohol, it is related to transgressions.
