Actions are established as such, not from thought (established). Likewise, it is said in the scriptures here that if one does not say, "I am the scripture," one will commit a grave offense. Other forms of pretense should also be understood in the same way. For example, if asked, a monk writes in his own handwriting, "Thus, you have entered the stream," what would happen if he said that? He would commit a grave offense, and so on. To show that the meaning is consistent, it is also the same from expressions that match in sound, for example: Thinking with pervasive conduct, I am a learner, Dwelling on the path, I am a dweller on the path. Saying such things, etc., are also the same as this. This is what is shown. Whatever meanings have sound correspondence in meaning, those meanings are sound correspondences. If one speaks from one's own thought with the sound correspondence of meaning, then one should know that, as before, one commits a lesser offense. An example is given here, such as "I am a learner," etc. If, with the intention of learning the Pratimoksha vows, etc., one says, "I am a learner," one commits a lesser offense. Pervasive conduct is learning. Thought is recollection. Similarly, if one dwells on the path and says, "I am a dweller on the path," and dwells in the stream and says, "I have entered the stream," etc., it is the same as this. Here, in the scriptures, it is asked: If one says, "I am a learner," what will happen? If one speaks from thought of the Pratimoksha vows, one will commit a grave offense. However, if one proclaims the qualities of a learner without actually having them, one will fall. Thus, and so on. Similarly, if a monk says, "I am liberated from all bonds, fetters, subtle latent defilements, and near afflictions," what will happen? If one speaks from thought of all bonds, fetters, subtle latent defilements, near afflictions, all entanglements, the past, the exhausted, the ceased, the separated forms, saying, "I am liberated from them," then (one commits) a lesser (offense).

it will become a serious offense. However, if one prophesies based on thought without complete combination, etc., it will ultimately be wrong. That's what was said. Speaking in a roundabout way, "Mara, alas, if you were like me, then you would have the fruit of non-return. Now I am not such a noble one," speaking in a roundabout way is less than stating it. Speaking in a roundabout way is even less than stating it. Here, the scripture says: "Mara, alas, if you become like him, then you and I are the same, and if that is the case, we are stream-enterers, once-returners, non-returners, and Arhats. If I am not anything from stream-enterer to Arhat, then who would say that I am a stream-enterer, a once-returner, a non-returner, an Arhat?" That's how it appears. Furthermore, he said, "I have not entered into meditative absorption today, nor yesterday, nor before that." This is also the same. Here, the scripture says: "If a monk says, 'I have not entered into worldly meditative absorption today, nor yesterday, nor ever before,' what will happen?" It will become a serious offense. To illustrate with the latter being correct: "Whose house is this? That person is free from attachment. This house is mine, but I am not free from attachment." This is how it is shown. Here, the scripture says: "Asked, a monk says, 'Which monk's house is this? That person is a stream-enterer, a once-returner, a non-returner, an Arhat. This house is also mine, but I am not a stream-enterer, a once-returner, a non-returner, an Arhat.' What will happen if he says that?" The Buddha said, "It will become a serious offense." That's how it appears. Here, "Whose house is this? That person is a stream-enterer," etc., these are the words spoken earlier. And I say, "I have not left desire," etc., if the latter words are correct and true, then the former words are even less than combination, that is the conclusion. Like this, there are linguistic errors and no errors.

English

Therefore, from the connection, it will not become sinful, just like water mixed with poison. In the case of tacit consent by not speaking, if a monk says, "Arhat, please enjoy my food," he likewise accepts without speaking. If asked, "Have others' afflictions been exhausted?" he indicates consent by not speaking. This is what the scripture says. In the Vinaya, it says, "Monk, if an Arhat says, 'Please enjoy my offerings,' and if one consents without speaking, it becomes a gross offense." If a wise person asks, "Have afflictions been exhausted?" consenting without speaking is also the same. Consent should also be noted here. The scripture here is: "Monk, Arhats have the right to offerings of clothing, alms, bedding, medicine for illness, and utensils." If one consents to this without speaking, it becomes a gross offense, and so on. Not speaking here means that it is established in the form of expression. Therefore, it is called a minor offense. Here, in all cases, if the other person can understand, it is considered lighter. Otherwise, it will be even lighter than a minor offense. Thus, falsehood was taught with the intention of claiming superiority. Now listen to other falsehoods. Thus, it has been shown that speaking falsely with the intention of claiming superiority by proclaiming human virtues will break the vows. Here, listen to and explain other falsehoods that can be confessed. Saying something to someone who understands, with a perception different from what is being said, is a lie. That is to say, if one has a perception different from what is to be said, and speaks for the sake of someone who can understand the meaning, then that is a lie. What if they cannot understand? It will become a minor offense. The emphasis on the word "self" is because if one speaks with a different perception from what is to be said, then that is a lie. If one mistakenly intends to say something else but says something else, then it is not, this is to clarify. So, how is the term "lie" established?
