Among all thefts, stealing land is the most serious. Here, land should be understood as representing the foundation of wealth, such as houses. Thus, it is asked: If monks steal houses, etc., what will happen? Answer: They commit a grave offense. When do they commit a fundamental offense? When the houses, etc., are divided, then they commit a fundamental offense. Stealing fruit by hitting it with sticks, etc., is considered theft when it falls to the ground. Stealing fruit by hitting it with sticks, etc., is only considered theft when it falls to the ground. If stealing with many friends, it is only considered theft when a share is obtained, not before. Here, the sutra asks: If clothes are placed in a dark place and four monks steal them, what will happen? Answer: They commit a grave offense. When do they commit a fundamental offense? When all four have taken their respective shares as their own, and one person's share contains a complete item, then it is a fundamental offense. If it is not complete, then it is a grave offense. When stealing the property of many people, it is only considered a loss when each person's share is of sufficient value. When many people steal, then the value of each person's share is determined. If stealing the property of many people, then the value of each owner's share will decrease. Here, the sutra asks: Is there a case where a monk steals a lot but does not commit a fundamental offense? Answer: Yes. If stealing the property of many people, then a grave offense is committed. Here, it also refers to when the value of the property of many people has not reached its full value, considering the many people, then committing a grave offense is certain. Here, the noble Near-Protected One says: If guardians are placed there, then only taking from them is considered not giving. For example, stupas, etc., and the property of the Sangha of the four directions, because guardians are needed to measure them. Others say: Only taking from the owner of the property is considered complete not giving. If stealing the property of one person with many people, then only the value of each person's share will be lost. Here

The scripture says that, similarly, if one steals with many people, it becomes a grave offense. If five mashakas are obtained from each person's share, then one falls, so it is said. Now, if many people's property is stolen by many people, how should it be understood? It should be understood that however much one person's share of the stolen object is, and however much one thief's share is, one falls according to that value. The Sangha's property is like a shared property of brothers, one should not consider the share done for the Sangha, because it is not dividing the land, but because there are many who strive to keep the precepts. Otherwise, one cannot measure the value according to the scriptures. Just as brothers' shared property, each one thinks that he can own all the property, because it is not that each one owns it separately. Similarly, the monks also have the right to own the Sangha's property, because it is not that each one owns it separately. Therefore, stealing for the sake of the Sangha, one falls only because there are five mashakas, and not because of each monk's share, this is how it is determined. Here, the scripture comes from the Vinaya: A resident monk is cultivating the Sangha's field, and not far from there is a householder's field, and the householder comes and says: Venerable, are you cultivating my field? This field is not yours, it belongs to the Sangha. He says: Venerable, the four great non-humans should testify. Having said that, the householder dug up the boundary markers that had been buried before and showed them, and the monk abandoned the cultivation. After the householder left, he buried the boundary markers back and continued to cultivate the field. The householder came again and said: Venerable, yesterday I made you fail, are you still cultivating the field now? He felt remorse. The Blessed One taught: If the object is complete, one will fall. If the object is not complete, one will commit a grave offense. So it is said. Thinking, if it is said that the object is complete, then, his intention is that the fall will only occur from the share that he owns. Because a field smaller than five mashakas is not reasonable, I think so.

If you think like that, it is not right. Why? Because the field is not divisible. The field of the Sangha is not to be divided, so it is impossible to divide the shares. Also, because there are many who are diligent in keeping vows. Because the monks are immeasurable, even if there is a share as small as a sesame seed, it is not enough to be fully valuable. Therefore, it is said in the Sutra of the Vinaya, "If the object is complete, or if it is incomplete," the evaluation of value does not occur here. Then, what is it? It will only become a grave offense. If it is said that the Blessed One also evaluated the value. Therefore, what is said here clearly refers to the undivided field. Otherwise, there would be no opportunity to evaluate the value. Whether picking, collecting, or in the forest, Stealing, as long as it is moved, it is stealing. Picking flowers, collecting clothes, piling them up, tying them into a bundle, when stealing, as long as the bundle is moved, it is stealing. Similarly, the forest is also, as long as it is moved, it is stealing. Then, in the "Differentiation," if flowers and trees are taken out and stolen, the value of the flowers and trees must be calculated, etc., what is the matter? Like this, because it is said "taken out from here," if it is taken out first, and then stolen later. If it is obvious in the middle, then how can it be said that as long as it is moved, it is stealing? The explanation says that taking out trees to steal is like sleeping with your mouth open. The explanation refers to the "Differentiation" of the Pratimoksha Sutra. Like this, the meaning of "taken out from here" is that the word "from...after" clearly does not refer to the previous time, but only to the same time. For example, "sleeping with your mouth open," "laughing with your eyes closed," and "arising in dependence" all have the word "from...after." Similarly, here also, it is said "taken out after," "from" refers to the same time, there is no doubt about this. The word forest here is only a symbol. That which has fruit is a forest, that which has flowers and fruit is a tree, and that which has fruit that is ripe and exhausted is medicine.
